UCO Drops Second Contest In Minnesota

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Another slow start doomed the Bronchos as Central Oklahoma lost 73-62 against Southwest Minnesota State Saturday afternoon to wrap up the two-day Central Region Crossover at St. Cloud State University.

UCO was outscored 18-8 in the first quarter and never could recover. The Bronchos got it back into single digits for much of the game but fell short in the end. Central heads to Springfield, Missouri Wednesday for a midweek non-conference matchup with Drury.

Saturday, Central Oklahoma fell behind 7-0 in the first 90 seconds before freshman Peyton Walker found her way to the free-throw line and made the second of a two-shot set. SMSU pushed the early lead to 11-1 at the 6:40 mark of the opening frame before a three-minute scoring drought for both teams. UCO made its first field goal on a jumper by Jacey Crawford with 3:33 left to end the drought and the teams were an even 7-7 through the rest of the opening quarter.

UCO got it back down to three in the second quarter thanks to a 6-0 run that included free-throws from Korie Allensworth, a jumper by the senior transfer, and a layup from Jordyn Turner. The last of which made it 30-27 with 2:51 left before halftime. SMSU doubled up the Bronchos though in the final three minutes and took a 38-31 lead into the break.

Southwest Minnesota pushed its lead up to 12 in the third quarter before the Bronchos responded with a 14-4 run to cut down to just two points. The game went to the final frame 55-49.

That's when it slipped away from the Bronchos. Southwest Minnesota outscored UCO 18-13 in the fourth quarter.

Allensworth led Central Oklahoma with 20 points in 30 minutes of action. She was 6-for-12 from the floor and an impressive 7-for-7 from the free-throw line. Allensworth, who made one 3-pointer, also had six rebounds.

LaKysia Johnson added 15 points off the bench, adding four boards and three steals. Turner finished in double figures as well, scoring 12 points to go with four rebounds and two assists. Turner was 5-for-14 from the floor and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line.

Talia Pogi scored four, Karly Wadsworth, Gracee Miller, and Walker all had three points and Crawford finished with two points.

UCO shot just 35.4 percent from the floor, making 23 of 65 shots. The Bronchos were 3-for-13 from behind the arc. Central did post an impressive 92.9 percent mark at the free-throw line, making 13 of 14 shots from the stripe.
