Bronchos Fall Short In Season Opener

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Central Oklahoma tried to overcome a slow start in its 2024-25 season opener Friday night but fell short in the effort 68-63 to St. Cloud State in the first of two games in the Central Region Crossover.

UCO (0-1) is back on the court Saturday at 2 p.m. to face Southwest Minnesota State at St. Cloud.

In her Broncho debut, newcomer Korie Allensworth scored a game-high 20 points. The senior was 10-for-15 from the floor and had five rebounds. Talia Pogi and LaKysia Johnson both scored 14 points to give UCO three in double figures.

Central Oklahoma shot 38.6 percent from the floor Friday, making 27 of 70 shots. The Bronchos were 4-for-18 from behind the 3-point line and just 5-for-9 from the free-throw line.

UCO never led in the game. The host Huskies of St. Cloud took a 3-0 lead on the second possession of the game and led 10-2 four minutes in. The Bronchos were outscored 20-13 in the opening quarter after a 5-for-16 start.

UCO outscored SCSU 20-18 through 90 percent of the second quarter before a 4-0 run to go into halftime gave the Huskies a 42-33 lead at the break.

It was the third quarter that gave UCO hope. The Bronchos outscored St. Cloud 16-10 to cut the lead down to just three points heading to the final frame.

UCO got it to three points on five different occasions in the final frame but could never quite get over the hump.

Central Oklahoma also got nine points from sophomore Gracee Miller, who was 4-for-8 from the floor. She added three rebounds and two assists. Karly Wadsworth and Jordyn Turner both scored three points. Turner had a team-high 11 rebounds.

UCO will play Southwest Minnesota State Saturday at 2 p.m. before returning from the north. The Bronchos are back on the road next week at Drury and at Midwestern State. Central's home opener is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 19 against Southern Nazarene.
