UCO Narrowly Misses Upset Bid In Texas

Bronchos Fall 85-73 at No. 4 Texas Woman's

DENTON, Texas – Central Oklahoma fought to the end with No. 4 Texas Woman's Wednesday afternoon, but the Bronchos came away with an 83-75 loss to the formerly top-ranked team in the country.

UCO finished the first month of the season with a 1-7 overall record.

"Today was the most complete we've played," third-year UCO head women's basketball coach Emma Andrews said. "We just couldn't get it done in the end. It's hard to get out of the losing mindset and TWU knows how to win. We're close, but we need to figure out how to win these games when we have a chance so we can build more confidence to keep doing it."

Wednesday's game was tied eight times and featured 12 lead changes. The Bronchos held a 3-point lead on two occasions in the fourth quarter, but with the game tied 70-70, it was TWU running away in the end with a 13-5 finish to earn the win.

LaKysia Johnson led Central Oklahoma with 17 points and Jordyn Turner added 16. Karly Wadsworth scored 15 points all on 3-pointers, and Gracee Miller added 11 to give UCO four in double figures.

Talia Pogi (six), Korie Allensworth (five), Peyton Walker (three), and Alexis Lewis (two) rounded out the scoring for Central Oklahoma.

The Bronchos shot 50.8 percent from the floor on Wednesday, making 30 of 59 total shots. UCO hit 57.9 percent of its 3-pointers, sinking 11 of 19 from outside. Central was also 4-for-8 at the free-throw line.

Central Oklahoma held TWU to just 18.8 percent from deep, with the host Pioneers making 3 of 16 from behind the arc. The Bronchos also forced 14 turnovers in the game. Texas Woman's shot 55.7 percent overall (34-for-61) and was aided by a 12-for-17 (70.6 pct.) mark at the free-throw line.

UCO trailed by as many as nine points in the first quarter, but battled back to force a tie on three different times in the second quarter, and soon after that took its first lead of the game. Central led 35-32 after a Wadsworth 3-pointer, but trailed 38-36 when TWU made a layup as time expired in the first half.

The Bronchos got a 3-point lead twice in the third quarter, both coming off baskets by Turner. But the hosts again had a response and pulled away to a 61-52 lead with 29 seconds left in the quarter. Wadsworth added another 3-pointer to cut it to six, 61-55, heading to the final frame.

The Bronchos got back in front yet again in the fourth quarter and led by three on two different occasions. Unfortunately, UCO's 68-67 lead, thanks to a Johnson layup with 4:50 to play in the game, would be the last.

TWU tied it with a free-throw, then went ahead 70-68. Pogi knocked down two free-throws to tie it at 70 with 3:39 to play. But the hosts, who were national runners-up in 2023-24 and spent most of the first month of the season ranked No. 1 in the country, pulled away with the 13-5 run down the stretch.

Central Oklahoma will begin MIAA play in December, which only has four games on the schedule compared to the eight this month. The Bronchos host No. 13 Pittsburg State on Wednesday, Dec. 4 and Missouri Southern on Sunday, Dec. 8 at Hamilton Field House.

UCO plays its final non-conference game of the season Dec. 17 at UC Colorado Springs, and will host Rogers State in an MIAA contest on Dec. 22 at Hamilton before breaking for the new year.
