UCO Cruises Past Ouachita Baptist In Home Opener

Studd Morris, Josh Taylor and Garrett Wells Had Bonus Wins in 29-10 Victory

EDMOND – Studd Morris and Garrett Wells notched first-period falls, Josh Taylor added a technical fall and No. 2-ranked Central Oklahoma eased past No. 23 Ouachita Baptist 29-10 Friday night at Hamilton Field House.

It was the 25th consecutive win – and the 50th in the last 51 outings -- for the No. 2-ranked Bronchos, who improved to 3-0 on the season in their home and MIAA opener despite missing several starters.

Morris needed just 2:26 to end his 125-pound bout in the opening match of the night, while Wells posted his fall at the 2:43 mark at 184. Taylor cruised to an 18-0 shellacking at 141, with UCO also getting wins from 157 Gabe Johnson, 165 Jaxon Randall, 174 Bryce Dauphin and 197 Emmanuel Skillings.

"It wasn't very pretty in a few spots, but we did okay," head coach Todd Steidley said. "I thought we wrestled hard for the most part. We're banged up at a few weights and it was good to get some of our other guys in there to see what they could do."

Morris got the Bronchos off to a fast start. The senior struck for a quick takedown and added a four-point near-fall before finally getting his third fall in a 6-0 start to the season with 34 seconds left in the opening period.

OBU's fifth-ranked Jimmy Anderson clipped Eli Kirk 5-1 at 133, but Taylor answered in dominating fashion in the next match. The sophomore had a takedown and four near-falls to end the match midway through the second period in improving to 11-0.

The Tigers earned a major decision at 141, but UCO won the next five matches to put the dual away.

Johnson -- ranked No. 1 and the defending national champion -- started that streak with a hard-fought 4-2 triumph over Jaylon Otero at 157, the difference coming on Johnson's first-period takedown.

Randall had a pair of takedowns in an 8-2 victory, then Dauphin barely held off Luke Brooks' takedown try in the final seconds to prevail 6-5. That brought up Wells and the fifth-ranked sophomore standout didn't waste time.

Wells scored a takedown just eight seconds into the match, added a near-fall and then gave up an escape. He followed with another takedown and ended the mismatch with 17 seconds left in the opening period.

Skillings earned UCO's last win, using a pair of takedowns for an 8-2 triumph.

The Tigers won the final match at heavyweight.

UCO won all four extra matches the teams wrestled, getting bonus wins from 141 Dailey Jennings, 165 Aidan Boline and 184 Seth Sarasua.

The Bronchos return to action next Friday with an MIAA road dual at Newman.
