Avery Bass Dominates Washburn, Bronchos Advance To Regional Semifinals

Central Oklahoma and Washburn Went To Penalty Kick Shootout In NCAA Opener

WARRENSBURG, Mo. – Avery Bass had a career performance to lead Central Oklahoma to the second round of the NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championship Friday afternoon.

The Central Region's fourth-seeded Bronchos officially tied fifth-seed Washburn, 0-0. The match went through the full 90 minutes, and two 10-minute overtime periods without a goal. So a penalty kick shootout would decide the advancing team.

Avery Bass made 13 saves in the first 110 minutes. She would make three more in the shootout, blocking an unheard of three consecutive penalties.

UCO's Kaitlyn Cotton, Madison Linavong, and Harmony Turner each put their penalty kicks through, with Turner's clinching the shootout and inciting a celebration on the field.

"Avery was so good today," first-year head women's soccer coach Amel Muhamedagic said. "To save the penalty in the first half was huge, and then she did it three straight times in the shootout. We are so proud of her and so thankful she's on our team."

Central Oklahoma and Washburn met in the regular season and played to a scoreless draw after 90 minutes in Topeka. They met again in the MIAA Soccer Championship Semifinals in Wichita, and it was UCO earning a 1-0 victory. Round 3 was much like the first, with no team able to find the back of the net.

Washburn outshot UCO 24-9 in the game and held a 13-4 advantage in shots on goal. But Bass saved every shot that came her way.

Bass moved over the 100 save mark for her career earlier this season. The junior from Broken Arrow is now up to 128 for her career and in eighth place on the UCO all-time saves list.

Cotton and Turner put shots on goal earlier in the game. So did Rebekah George and Evelyn Sydnes. But none of them got past Washburn.

UCO advances to the Central Region Semifinal Sunday afternoon at Central Missouri's South Rec Complex. No. 1 seed UCM is playing No. 8 Ouachita Baptist and the winner meets the Bronchos.
