Central Oklahoma Comes Up Short In Home Opener

Bronchos Fall 64-57 To Southern Nazarene In Tuesday Non-Conference Game

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma kept fighting and kept chipping away but could never get over the final hump before falling 64-57 to Southern Nazarene Tuesday night at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos are 1-4 this season following Tuesday's home opener. Southern Nazarene, which was preseason ranked No. 22 in the country before falling out of the Top 25 earlier Tuesday, is 2-2 on the season.

"We've talked about it a lot, not being able to play four full quarters of basketball, and I think that was a problem again tonight," UCO head women's basketball coach Emma Andrews said. "Even with a pretty rough second quarter, we still had a chance in the end. If we can overcome those, we're going to be a lot better. The girls just need that confidence we can get it done in these close games."

After a 3-pointer in the final seconds of the first quarter gave SNU an 18-16 lead at the first break, the guest Crimson Storm outscored the Bronchos 19-9 in the second quarter to take a 37-25 lead at halftime. But UCO had a response out of halftime.

Central Oklahoma went on a 10-0 run to start the third quarter, capped off by a Talia Pogi 3-pointer that cut the lead down to two points, 37-35. But UCO couldn't get closer. A 7-1 return run for SNU steadied the ship and the same close calls continued throughout the rest of the game.

The Bronchos cut it to four points twice later in the third quarter and once again in the fourth but could not find a way to get closer.

Korie Allensworth led Central Oklahoma with 21 points. The senior forward was 8-for-13 from the floor, 3-for-3 from behind the arc, and 2-for-4 at the free-throw line. Allensworth also had six rebounds.

LaKysia Johnson added 11 points and six rebounds to go with three steals. Jordyn Turner chipped in nine points and had a team-high 12 rebounds.

UCO shot 36.2 percent from the floor, 33.3 percent from behind the arc with a 5-for-15 total, and just 52.6 percent from the free-throw line, making 10 of 19 on the night.

Johnson's 11 came off the bench. Karly Wadsworth added three to give UCO 14 from its non-starters. Pogi finished with six points, Gracee Miller added four, and Peyton Walker three, to give UCO 43 from its starting five.

Central Oklahoma started a busy week of three games in five days Tuesday night. The Bronchos travel to Searcy, Arkansas Thursday to take on Harding before hosting Southwestern Oklahoma State Saturday night at Hamilton Field House.
