Bronchos Headed to MIAA Championship

Avery Bass Blanks Washburn, Caleah Carter Scores Game Winner in Wichita

WICHITA, Kan. – Central Oklahoma beat Washburn 1-0 Thursday evening in the MIAA Soccer Championship Semifinal to advance to the title match for the first time since winning it all in 2019.

The two schools met earlier this season and played 90 full minutes of scoreless soccer. It appeared Thursday's playoff matchup would be the same.

Enter true freshman striker Caleah Carter.

The Edmond, Oklahoma native and rookie forward scored the lone goal in the 67th minute to secure the win. Adison Knocke assisted on the play with a big through pass from just before midfield. That put the ball near the top of the box, where Carter took, made a move to create space from one defender, and fired the shot and score.

"Very proud of the team," first-year UCO head women's soccer coach Amel Muhamedagic said. "The defense was so good, and we did a good job of creating chances. Washburn is a good team with 15 shutouts on the season, but we found a way to get one through and that was all our defense needed."

Avery Bass picked up her eighth shutout of the season playing the full 90 in goal for the Bronchos. The junior, who is among the best in school history in career saves, made five on Thursday to put away the top-seeded Ichabods.

Washburn outshot UCO 13-6, but the shots on goal was an even 5-5.

Central Oklahoma advances to the MIAA Championship match and will play Central Missouri Saturday at 2 p.m. in the final. The winner receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championship in the Central Regional. UCO is already fifth in the regional rankings and in line for an at-large bid, but can take the AQ if it wins its third MIAA postseason championship Saturday afternoon.
