Central Oklahoma Wins Overtime Thriller In Edmond

Bronchos Beat Rival NSU With 95th Minute Goal From Captain Rebecca Tweedy

EDMOND – Rebecca Tweedy's 95th minute goal sent Central Oklahoma to the MIAA Women's Soccer Championship Semifinals in dramatic fashion Sunday.

UCO 1, Northeastern State 0.

Central Oklahoma, the No. 4 seed in the league's postseason tournament, needed extra time to get past No. 5 Northeastern State on Sunday in Edmond. The game was played at Chad Richison Stadium due to excessive rain that caused unplayable conditions at Tom Thompson Field. The game was a defensive slugfest.

"Credit to Northeastern," UCO head soccer coach Amel Muhamedagic said. "They played us so well and certainly had their chances to beat us. But our girls fought so hard to make sure that didn't happen. We are so happy for our captain. Tweedy is a great kid, the kind you love to have on your team, and we're so happy it ended the way it did."

After 90 minutes of scoreless soccer, and four more in overtime, Central goalkeeper Avery Bass punted a ball 50 yards downfield. NSU deflected it back and its goalkeeper came out of the box to clear it. Fortunately for Central, the clearance went directly to Tweedy. She gathered the ball, took one dribble, and fired a shot with her left foot 28 yards out. The keeper was out of position and no one could stop the ball from going into the back of the net for the game-winning score.

Central Oklahoma advances to the MIAA Soccer Championship Semifinals, which are to be held Thursday, Nov. 14 in Wichita, Kansas at Scheels Stryker Soccer Complex. The fourth-seeded Bronchos will meet league champion Washburn, who beat Fort Hays State 2-1 in the quarterfinals on Sunday. No. 2 Missouri Western and No. 3 Central Missouri also won and will play in the other semifinal. The 2024 MIAA Women's Soccer Championship final is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 16.

Missouri Western and Central Missouri will play at noon Thursday with UCO and Washburn meeting at 3 p.m. The Bronchos played Washburn to a scoreless draw earlier this season in Topeka.

Sunday in Edmond, the defense on both sides showed out. UCO took 14 shots in the game, put five on goal, and spent most of the 95 minutes frustrated at the missed opportunities. Northeastern State took eight total shots and put three on goal, but couldn't get anything past Bass.

Bass recorded her seventh shutout of the season in the win. The junior goalkeeper, who recently became the 10th player in school history with 100 saves, had three more on Sunday in keeping the clean sheet. Bass is already up to ninth place on that list with 107 career saves.

UCO's chances came early, including 30 seconds into the match. Caleah Carter took a shot immediately after kickoff but missed wide left. Carter took three shots in the game and put one on goal.

Tweedy took a game-high four shots, with two on goal. Madison Linavong and Jordan Tanges took two shots each. Callen Snider, Rebekah George, and Adison Knocke each took one shot.

Bass had to make one save in the first half and made two more in the second half.

Central Oklahoma has made the MIAA Women's Soccer Championship each year since joining the league in 2012. The Bronchos won titles in 2018 and 2019, the latter as the No. 4 seed. UCO is 13-7-3 overall in the tournament, including a 2-0-0 mark against Washburn.
