Central Drops First MIAA Contest

UCO Falls 3-0 To Missouri Western In Sunday Matinee

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma dropped its first MIAA contest of the season Sunday afternoon with a 3-0 loss to Missouri Western at Tom Thompson Field.

UCO fell to 4-4-2 overall on the season and is now 1-1-2 in the MIAA.

"We didn't have any energy today and we didn't play at the level we needed to," UCO head women's soccer coach Amel Muhamedagic said. "Missouri Western is a good team and you can't keep up with good teams if you don't give it all you got. We need to learn from this and move on and get ready for next week."

Central Oklahoma trailed 1-0 at halftime. The Bronchos nearly tied the game in the second half on two occasions.

The first in the 51st minute. Rebecca Tweedy got a pass in the box and for a split second, had one-on-one with the keeper. The UCO captain tried flicking a shot over the MWSU goalkeeper but went to high and off target.

Then in the 55th minute, Madison Linavong got open space as the Bronchos pushed forward into the MWSU box. She fired a shot that appeared to be heading into the goal. Tweedy was ahead of it and the shot deflected off Tweedy and into the back of the net, however, offside was called and the goal taken off the board.

Missouri Western tightened down on defense after that, then added two more goals to put the game away. After taking the 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute of the game, the Griffons made it 2-0 in the 67th minute, and then 3-0 in the 80th minute.

Central Oklahoma was outshot by Missouri Western, 12-11, and the guests had an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal. Avery Bass played the full 90 in goal for UCO and made five saves in the game.

Central Oklahoma is home again next weekend for the second half of a two-week homestand. The Bronchos host Fort Hays State Friday at 2 p.m., then Nebraska Kearney on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Tom Thompson Field.
