History Made In Joplin

Central Oklahoma Off To Best Start In School History, 16-0, After Beating Missouri Southern Friday Night

JOPLIN, Mo. – Central Oklahoma made history Friday night with a 3-1 victory at Missouri Southern in an MIAA road volleyball match.

The win pushed UCO's overall record to 16-0 to mark the best start in school history. Central is 3-0 in the MIAA and will play at Central Missouri Saturday afternoon.

"This record is nice and it's great for the team to enjoy, because it's something that can't be taken away from them," UCO head volleyball coach Edgar Miraku said. "Records are meant to be broken and one day someone will probably beat this, but for now, it's great. I'm proud of everyone on the team, they all play a part.

"We also can't really enjoy it too long," Miraku continued. "We have to get ready for the next one in less than 24 hours."

Central is 3-0 in the MIAA and will play at Central Missouri Saturday afternoon. That match will take place at 2 p.m. in Warrensburg, Missouri, where the UCM Jennies are 5-7 overall and 1-2 in league play.

In 2015, Miraku led the Bronchos to a 15-0 start. The school record for an overall win streak is 22 matches (2003).

Friday in Joplin, UCO had to work for it. The Lions (2-12, 0-3 MIAA) took the first set from the Bronchos 25-22 as UCO hit an abysmal .087 from the floor. The 11 attack errors in the first set put Central in a tight spot, but the Bronchos also quickly recovered in the second set.

Central won 25-17 in the second set to tie the match, 1-1. UCO led 4-1, then 8-2, and eventually 22-12 in earning the set point. The Bronchos kicked it in high gear in the third set, never trailing in a commanding 25-12 win. UCO led by as many as 10 early midway through the set and by as many 12 late before the 13-point win that put the Bronchos ahead 2-1 in the match.

The fourth set was much tighter, although only one lead change occurred. It was 17-16 UCO before a 5-0 run put the Bronchos in front comfortably enough to secure the win and the new school record.

Jenna Karp landed the final kill of the night to earn the win. She finished with 14 kills and three blocks and continued her dominating play with a .433 hitting percentage.

Addison Wimmer led the way for the Bronchos, with a career-high 26 kills. The senior from Yukon hit .304 and added a pair of aces. On defense, Wimmer had 21 digs and three blocks.

Sydney Huck added a dozen kills, giving the trio 52 of UCO's 64 kills on the night.

Lindsey Houran, who had 47 assists in the match, added four kills and 20 digs on defense. Wimmer's 21 digs led the team in front of Houran's 20. Katie Le added 16 digs and Andrea Coady had 15.

Central Oklahoma will take on Central Missouri at 2 p.m. Saturday. The Bronchos will return to Missouri next weekend to complete the four-game road swing. UCO takes on Northwest Missouri and Missouri Western before returning home Oct. 17 & 19 back at Hamilton Field House.
