UCO Falls At Emporia State

Bronchos Drop MIAA Road Game 63-52 In Kansas

EMPORIA, Kan. – Central Oklahoma fell behind early and never fully recovered in a 62-52 setback at Emporia State Saturday afternoon in an MIAA matchup at White Auditorium.

Central Oklahoma fell to 2-12 on the season with the loss and the Bronchos are now 1-7 in league competition.

"We played better as the game went on but we couldn't get that one extra stop," UCO head women's basketball coach Emma Andrews said. "We made a great run in the third quarter but couldn't get that one extra stop on defense. We were close, but it didn't come our way today."

There were no lead changes on Saturday. UCO tied the game, 2-2, before a 7-0 run by Emporia. Then a quick 4-0 spurt by the Bronchos made it 9-6, but an 11-0 run by the host Lady Hornets followed and that's how the first quarter ended, 20-6.

The Bronchos outscored ESU 13-11 in the second quarter to close the gap a little before halftime. Then in the third quarter, the Bronchos had an offensive outburst, scoring 23 points in the frame. UCO hit 10 shots in the third quarter, including two 3-pointers, and held ESU to 3-for-13 from the floor. The Lady Hornets were aided by seven free-throws and still led 44-42 heading into the final quarter.

But there, the Bronchos couldn't get over the hump. Emporia outscored UCO 17-10 in the final 10 minutes to pull away with the win.

Central Oklahoma shot 37.9 percent from the floor, making 22 of 58 total shots. The Bronchos were 3-for-16 from behind the 3-point line and 5-for-7 from the free-throw line.

Alena Wilson led UCO in scoring with 14 points. The junior had a double-double with 10 rebounds. She went 5-for-12 from the floor and 4-for-6 from the free-throw line.

Reagan Fox also scored in double figures, adding 11 points and five rebounds. She went 4-for-10 from the floor, hit two of Central's three 3-pointers, and also made one free-throw.

Wilson and Fox were the only two Bronchos to earn a trip to the line on Saturday.

Caley Young made it three Bronchos in double figures, scoring 10 points to go with four rebounds.

Talia Pogi added seven points, Lexi Foreman scored four, and Aliyah Llanusa, LaKysia Johnson, and Natalie Stice each scored two in the loss.

Central Oklahoma is back home next week. The Bronchos will host Northeastern State on Wednesday, Jan. 10 at 5:30 p.m. before welcoming Rogers State on Saturday, Jan. 13 at 1:30 p.m.
