Broncs Tripped In Topeka

Central Oklahoma Falls On Shot With 2.0 Seconds Remaining

TOPEKA, Kan. – Central Oklahoma got better with each quarter while Washburn did the opposite but in the end it was the host Ichabods that turned back the Bronchos 64-62 in an MIAA matchup at Lee Arena Thursday night.

UCO used a 10-0 run in the fourth quarter to gain a four-point advantage, 60-56, with 3:50 left in the game. WU then put in six straight to go in front, 62-60, with 59 seconds left. LaKysia Johnson tied the game for the Bronchos with 45 seconds left, then after a defensive stop, the junior guard got the rebound and went down the floor taking what could've been a game-winning shot. She rimmed out with 23 seconds left and set up Washburn with a chance.

Then with 2.0 left in regulation, Washburn senior Aubrey Dewey drove into the lane and scored the game-winning basket. After a timeout, Alena Wilson got a shot off on the block as time expired but missed the buzzer beater.

Central Oklahoma fell to 2-11 on the season with the loss and the Bronchos are now 1-6 in the MIAA.

Johnson and Wilson both led Central Oklahoma with season highs. The two juniors scored 16 points apiece. Reagan Fox scored 14 points for the third game in a row to give the Bronchos three in double figures.

Caley Young added four points and six other Bronchos scored two points each – Aliyah Llanusa, Natalie Stice, Aspen Williston, Gracee Miller, Talia Pogi, and Alexi Martin.

Stice scored her two in the first half and with the driving layup, the sixth-year senior from Tahoka, Texas, who began her career in 2018 sitting out a redshirt season at Eastern New Mexico, scored her 1,000th career point. Stice was at ENMU for four years and played two seasons there. She sat out a redshirt season and the school canceled the season following the pandemic. Stice played her fifth year at Midwestern State last season.

Central Oklahoma went back and forth with Washburn in the early going on Thursday night, but trailed 20-13 after one quarter. The Bronchos went to halftime down 36-27, then began to chip away at things in the second half.

UCO outscored WU by two in the third quarter, 17-15, and made the deficit seven once again.

After scoring first in the fourth, Washburn answered before UCO started the 10-0 run to take the lead.

Thursday night marked the third one-possession loss of the season for the Bronchos and the fourth single-digit loss in 13 games this season.

UCO is back on the floor Saturday. The Bronchos take on Emporia State at 1:30 p.m. from White Auditorium.

Central returns home next week to take on Northeastern State (Jan. 10) and Rogers State (Jan. 13).
