UCO Has Big Road Performance, Picks Up MIAA Win

Central Oklahoma Beat Newman 77-59 Saturday In Conference Play

WICHITA, Kan. – Central Oklahoma got a pair of 20-point games from LaKysia Johnson and Alena Wilson and the Bronchos won their third game in the last four tries, beating Newman 77-59 Saturday afternoon.

The Bronchos improved to 5-14 on the season and UCO is now 4-9 in the MIAA.

"It took us a little while to get some things figured out but the team is playing well now and they did a great job today of working together, finding each other, and getting the job done," UCO head women's coach Emma Andrews said. "We're doing a really good job of playing together as a team right now and it's helping us so much."

Wilson scored 20 points, going 7-for-14 from the floor and 6-for-7 from the free-throw line. She also had seven rebounds, two assists, two steals, and one blocked shot. Johnson scored 20 points on 6 of 11 shooting with an 8-for-8 line from the free-throw stripe. Johnson added two rebounds and two steals.

A dozen Bronchos played on Saturday and 10 scored. Karly Wadsworth and Alexis Martin scored nine points and combined for four 3-pointers. Talia Pogi added seven with one 3-pointer. Reagan Fox and Natalie Stice both scored three points and both hit one three. Aliyah Llanusa, Caley Young, and Tayler Factor each scored two.

UCO jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter and broke a second early tie, 7-7, with a big run to pull away. The 8-0 run came off a spark from Johnson to the tune of 10 first-quarter points off the bench that helped the Bronchos gain an early lead. She scored six during the 8-0 stint. The junior from Altus, Oklahoma was 4-for-4 from the field – all layups – and also made a pair of free-throws to get into double digits in the first frame. Central led 19-10 after one quarter shooting over 60 percent from the floor.

Newman made a run to start the second quarter, scoring the first six to cut the lead to one possession. But Johnson knocked down another shot to end the early run by the hosts. Central went on an 8-2 run after that and led 27-18 when Newman called its second timeout of the first half with 3:45 to play before the break.

The second quarter was closer by the end of the frame. UCO went 5-for-14 and Newman 5-13, both teams were 2-for-4 from behind the arc, but Central went 6-for-6 at the line to Newman's 4-for-6, and the Bronchos ended the quarter outscoring the Jets 18-16 to take a 37-26 lead into halftime.

Newman made another push to start the third quarter and cut the lead to one possession again, 44-41, with 4:21 to play. But the Bronchos had a big response. Wadsworth hit two 3-pointers and Pogi hit another in addition to a pair of free-throws. Wadsworth's second trey capped off an 11-0 run in three minutes. Central ended the quarter with continued success as Wadsworth sank a 30-footer at the buzzer to give the Bronchos a 60-47 lead at the final break.

Central started slow in the fourth quarter, missing its first seven shots. But a nifty pass in the lane from Martin found Wilson, who converted an and-1 layup. UCO went on to control the final frame and pick up its third win in four games.

UCO ended the game shooting 40.7 percent, making 24 of 59 shots. The Bronchos made 7 of 20 shots from outside, a 35.0 percent mark. And Central Oklahoma went 22-for-24 from the free-throw line. UCO missed their first two attempts of the game before making 22 in a row from that point.

Central returns home next week after playing 5 of 7 on the road in January. UCO hosts Pittsburg State Thursday, Feb. 1 and Missouri Southern Feb. 3 at Hamilton Field House. The Bronchos play five more at home including those two in the final five weeks of the season.
