Harper, Ritz Spark UCO To Doubleheader Split

EDMOND (April 8) – Shayla Harper's first-inning grand slam put Central Oklahoma in control while Terin Ritz had a dominating performance at the plate and in the circle as the Bronchos blistered Central Missouri 12-0 in the second game of a Saturday afternoon doubleheader at Gerry Pinkston Stadium.

No. 4-ranked UCO dropped a frustrating 3-2 nine-inning decision in the opener before bouncing back in convincing fashion to earn the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association split. The Bronchos are now 30-5 overall and 12-2 in the league.

"We had our chances in the first game and didn't get it done, so that's on us," head coach Cody White. "That was frustrating, but I was proud of the way we put that game behind us and focused on the second one.

"It was important to come back and make a statement, which I think we did. We made a lot of good swings and Terin was fantastic on the dish."

Ritz baffled the Jennies in a four-inning stint in the circle, giving up two hits while striking out four. The sophomore right-hander didn't walk a batter and threw just 49 pitches in moving to 11-0. Corrina Rivas put UCM down in order in the fifth to close out the rout.

Ritz also shined at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a homer and four runs batted in. Harper finished 2-for-3 with five RBI, while Rylee Lemos and Emily Deramus also had two hits apiece as the Bronchos battered four Central Missouri pitchers for 11 hits.

UCO didn't waste time taking command in the nightcap.

Lemos and Amelya Huggins sandwiched walks around Deramus' bloop single to load the bases and Harper emptied them with a one-out, no-doubt blast to left-center field for her eighth homer of the year.

The Bronchos upped their lead to 7-0 in the third.

UCO had four straight one-out singles in the inning, with Jacee Minter and Harper getting the rally started. Ritz's base hit to left scored the first run, Tatum Long followed with an RBI single up the middle and Shayleigh Odom made it 7-0 with a sacrifice fly.

The Bronchos finished the scoring with a five-run outburst in the fifth.

The speedy Lemos led off with a triple off the center field wall and trotted home on Deramus' bloop double to right field before Huggins and Minter walked to load the bases. Harper plated one with a groundout, then Ritz smacked a high fly ball over the center field fence for her seventh homer to make it 12-0.

UCO fell behind 2-0 after two innings of the first game, but drew even in the third with two swings of the bat.

Mikayla Rutland opened the third with her fifth homer of the season, this one a drive over the left field wall. Deramus made it 2-2 an out later, rocketing the first pitch she saw off the top of the scoreboard in left-center for her ninth homer.

Neither team scored again until the top of the ninth when the Jennies strung together three straight one-out singles to load the bases before going ahead on a walk.

UCO had its chances in the sixth and seventh.

Huggins led off the sixth with a walk and pinch-runner Makella Mobly went to second on Minter's single the left side. Harper's sacrifice bunt advanced both runners, then Mobly tried to score on a ground-ball to third and was thrown out on a close play at the plate.

Odom opened the seventh with a double down the left field line and went to third on Rutland's sacrifice, but consecutive groundouts ended UCO's chance to end the game.

The Bronchos finished with eight hits, getting two apiece from Minter and Ritz.

Jordyn Pipkin took the tough loss in the circle, throwing 130 pitches in a gutsy 8 1/3-inning outing. She gave up 10 hits and three runs while striking out six. Rivas got the final two outs of the ninth.

UCO goes back on the road next week for back-to-back league doubleheaders at Northeastern State and Rogers State.
