UCO Splits With RiverHawks

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. (April 14) – Jordyn Pipkin tossed a one-hitter in a first-game rout and No. 4-ranked Central Oklahoma split a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association doubleheader with Northeastern State Friday afternoon.

Shayla Harper hit a grand slam and drove in five runs as the Bronchos rolled to a 9-0 run-rule romp in the opener but NSU came back to take a 3-1 decision in the nightcap. UCO, now 31-6 overall and 13-3 in league play, moves on to Claremore Saturday for a noon showdown against No. 8-rated and defending national champion Rogers State.

"We didn't do enough offensively and it cost us," head coach Cody White said. "Our pitching was pretty good today, but we didn't swing the bats like we have been the last few weeks.

"Hopefully we can get it going tomorrow. It's going to be a challenge against a really good Rogers team and we'll have to be at our best to have a chance."

The Bronchos had seven hits in the first game, bunching those together in scoring four runs in the third and five in the fourth to break away from a scoreless tie.

Jacee Minter got UCO on the board in the third with an RBI single, then Harper drew a bases-loaded walk to force in a run. Terin Ritz drove in a run with a fielder's choice and Tatum Long made it 4-0 with an RBI groundout.

The Bronchos put it away with their fourth-inning explosion.

Emily Deramus reached on an one-out error to get things going, Amelya Huggins had a single to center field and Minter walked to load the bases. Harper quickly emptied them with her ninth homer of the season, this one a shot to left-center, and Ritz followed with a solo blast to right field to make it 9-0.

Pipkin was masterful in the circle, giving up just one hit while walking one and striking out two in going the full five innings. The sophomore right-hander needed just 59 pitches in moving to 13-3 on the season.

UCO broke a scoreless tie in the second game in the top of fourth when Harper drove a two-out double to right-center and scored on Ritz's single to center field.

The RiverHawks came back with a two-run homer in the bottom of the frame to move in front, then added an insurance run in the fifth. The Bronchos didn't have a hit in the final three innings and finished with just three for the game.
