No. 30 Central Oklahoma Edges No. 23 Washburn

EDMOND – No. 30 Central Oklahoma made a big comeback to earn an MIAA win over No. 23 Washburn on Friday, picking up the narrow 4-3 victory at Broncho Courts.

UCO improved to 8-7 overall on the season and 3-2 in the MIAA.

"I'm so proud of this team for their work today to get the win," UCO head tennis coach Joe Vann said. "We've missed so many of these this season and to get one against a really good team like Washburn is a big deal for the team."

Central Oklahoma has lost 4-3 on three occasions this season, but Friday afternoon, the Bronchos flipped the script.

UCO lost the doubles point and then trailed 2-0 after Washburn's second-ranked Sofia Smagina won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 singles over Blythe Buntrock. Central got its first point at No. 4 singles from Nikki Boyar, who won 6-3, 6-1. Then UCO tied the match, 2-2, with a win at No. 2 singles from Pete Komada, who upset 24th-ranked Maja Jung, 6-2, 7-5. The three final matches all went to third-set tiebreakers, and the Bronchos found a way to get two of them and the win.

Karyna Yurchenko won 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 at No. 6 singles and Nefeli Zafeiri won 3-6, 7-6, 6-2 at No. 3 singles to clinch the match. Washburn got one more point with a win at No. 5 singles, with Tizia Brocks dropping the three-set match, 4-6, 6-4, 5-7.

Central Oklahoma is right back at it on Saturday morning with another big MIAA matchup. The Bronchos welcome No. 19 Northwest Missouri to Edmond for an 11 a.m. dual.
