Bronchos Silence Lincoln In Doubleheader Sweep

EDMOND (April 7) – A trio of pitchers combined to throw back-to-back shutouts and Central Oklahoma also unleashed a devastating offensive attack in rolling past Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association rival Lincoln Friday afternoon at Gerry Pinkston Stadium.

The No. 4-ranked Bronchos cruised to 12-0 and 10-0 run-rule routs, giving up just seven hits in the two games. Jordyn Pipkin and Corrina Rivas combined for a two-hitter in the first game, while Terin Ritz scattered five hits in a complete-game outing in the nightcap.

Amelya Huggins and Tatum Long led UCO at the plate, each going 4-for-6 on the day. The Bronchos finished with 24 hits, including nine for extra bases.

"We played well today," head coach Cody White said. "Our pitchers did a great job keeping them off-balance and I thought we stayed aggressive at the plate all day.

"It was a good performance, but we can't rest on what we did today and need to get ready for two tough games tomorrow."

The Bronchos, who have won 23 of their last 24 games, improved to 29-4 overall and 11-1 in league play. UCO is back in action Saturday, hosting Central Missouri for another league twinbill at 12 p.m.

Long, Emily Deramus and Shayleigh Odom all homered in the opener, which ended after five innings on the eight-run rule.

Long got the long-ball attack going in the bottom of the second, launching a two-out solo shot off the scoreboard in left-center field to give UCO a 1-0 lead.

The Bronchos made it 4-0 in the third. Mikayla Rutland drew a lead-off walk and Deramus blasted a one-out bomb over the left field wall for her eighth homer of the season. Huggins followed with a double to left-center, went to third on a wild pitch and trotted home on Jacee Minter's single to center.

UCO blew it open in the fourth, pushing across eight runs on five hits and four walks to make it 12-0.

Odom led off the long inning with a bloop single to right, then Rutland and Rylee Lemos both walked to load the bases. Deramus' sacrifice fly drove in the first run, Huggins followed with an RBI single through the left side and Shayla Harper drew a two-out walk to keep things going.

Ritz delivered a two-run single to left, Long drove an RBI base hit up the middle and Odom completed the scoring with a high fly ball that just cleared the wall down the left field wall for her second homer of the season.

Deramus, Huggins, Ritz, Long and Odom had two hits apiece to lead an 11-hit attack.

Pipkin was virtually untouchable in the circle, giving up just a lead-off double in the third. She needed only 48 pitches in going the first four innings, striking out five and walking none to improve to 12-2.

Rivas closed out the game with a one-hit fifth-inning outing.

Ritz was in the circle in the second game and went all five innings in moving to 10-0 on the season. The sophomore right-hander didn't walk a batter and struck out seven while throwing just 68 pitches.

The Bronchos took control early, scoring four runs in the second. Ritz reached on a one-out walk to start things, then Long and Odom had consecutive hits to load the bases for Rutland.

She promptly emptied them, roping a three-run double to left field, and Lemos followed with a double to center to make it 4-0.

Minter opened the third with a double to left-center and went to third on a fly out before scoring on Long's single through the left side to up the advantage to 5-0.

UCO put the game away in the fourth with a five-run eruption.

Lemos was hit by pitch to start the inning, Deramus followed with a base hit and Huggins drove an RBI single to left-center to cap a 10-pitch at bat. Minter laced a two-run single down the left field line and Rylee Anglen later added a two-run pinch-hit single to right-center to make it 10-0.

Huggins, Minter and Long had two hits apiece to pace a 13-hit assault.
