Bronchos Sweep Fort Hays State

EDMOND (April 22) – No. 5-ranked Central Oklahoma picked up a couple of key Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association wins over Fort Hays State Saturday afternoon at cold and windy Gerry Pinkston Stadium.

Shayla Harper belted a two-run home run in a 5-1 first-game win and the Bronchos overcame an early 1-0 deficit to take the nightcap 4-1. UCO stretched its winning streak to eight straight in improving to 39-6 on the season and 19-3 in league play.

"It was a tough day with the cold and wind and we didn't play our best, but we came out with two big wins," head coach Cody White said. "Every game is especially important at this point in the season, especially when you're chasing somebody in the standings."

The Bronchos remain a game behind Missouri Southern for the MIAA lead heading into the final weekend of conference play. UCO hosts Pittsburg State and the Lions for consecutive doubleheaders next weekend.

UCO took a 2-0 lead in the third inning of the opener when Emily Deramus led off with a walk and Harper came through with a two-out bomb. It was the 11th homer of the season for the senior slugger, this one a massive blast over the right field wall.

The Bronchos extended their advantage to 5-0 in the fifth with a trio of two-out runs.

Jacee Minter got things going with a one-out walk and Terin Ritz – after staying alive when FHSU dropped a pop-up behind the plate – reached on a two-out infield single. Tatum Long's single up the middle scored Minter and Shayleigh Odom followed with a two-run hit to center.

FHSU scored its lone run in the top of the sixth before Jordyn Pipkin went on to polish off her 12th complete game of the season, including the fifth straight.

The sophomore right-hander scattered six hits while walking one and striking out two, improving to 17-3 for the year.

Harper and Ritz had two hits apiece to lead the offense, while Rylee Lemos tied a single-game school record with three stolen bases.

The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first in the nightcap, with UCO moving in front with a pair of runs in the third.

Odom tied it with one swing to lead off the inning, crushing a solo shot to right field for her fourth homer of the year. Lemos ripped a one-out double to right-center and Deramus followed with an RBI single through the right side to make it 2-1.

The Bronchos added a run in the fifth. Mikayla Rutland was hit by pitch with one out, stole second and went to third on Deramus' single through the left side before scoring on a wild pitch.

UCO tacked on an insurance run in the sixth when Ritz reached on a two-out walk and raced around to score on an error that allowed Long to reach second.

Ritz went the distance in the circle to earn the win, pushing her record to 15-1. She gave up eight hits and walked four while striking out two.

Deramus had two of UCO's seven hits.
