Bronchos Sweep Pitt State

EDMOND – A Game 1 overtaking was followed by a dramatic comeback victory in Game 2 as No. 5 Central Oklahoma swept Pittsburg State Saturday afternoon in an MIAA doubleheader at Gerry Pinkston Stadium.

The Bronchos won 7-2 and 4-3 and set the stage for Championship Sunday on the final day of the regular season. UCO hosts Missouri Southern Sunday at 1 p.m. & 3 p.m. The two schools enter the season finale tied atop the league standings with identical 21-3 records.

"We played really well in Game 1 today and needed to work for it in Game 2, but we found a way to get it done," UCO head softball coach Cody White said. "We all knew Sunday was a possibility and we didn't want to think about it our worry about it, but now it's time to focus on that. It's going to be a fun atmosphere for sure and it'll be really cool to have the opportunity to win a title on the last day of the season."

UCO is now 41-6 overall after Saturday's sweep.

The Bronchos scored their first two runs on RBI groundouts from Jacee Minter, with Emily Deramus touching home plate both times. Then in the fourth, Amelya Huggins knocked an RBI single through the left side to score Mikayla Rutland and Rylee Lemos singled up the middle to score Shayleigh Odom and give UCO a 4-1 lead.

The Bronchos put it away in the fifth. Rutland blasted a two-run home run to left center, scoring Odom, and Deramus got her third hit of the game to score Lemos and make it 7-1.

Jordyn Pipkin (18-3) got the win for the Bronchos, throwing all seven innings. She gave up two runs – in the third and seventh innings – on 11 Pitt State hits.

UCO also had 11 hits in the game. Deramus led the way with three while Lemos and Huggins both had two. All three had a double.

In Game 2, Terin Ritz got the start and eventually got the win thanks to her own go-ahead RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Pitt State opened up a 3-0 lead after two innings before the Bronchos slowly chipped away at that. Shayla Harper hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Huggins and put UCO on the board in the fourth inning. Then Tatum Long added an RBI double to right center to score Minter to make it 3-2. In the sixth, Harper singled to score Rylee Anglen, who pinch ran for Huggins after a leadoff walk. That tied the game. Minter had also singled to left before Harper's at bat, and then she scored when Ritz drilled a 3-1 pitch to left center and gave the Bronchos a 4-3 lead.

Ritz improved to 16-1 on the season with the win, throwing all seven innings and allowing three runs – two earned – on seven hits and two walks. She struck out one batter on the day. She also went 1-for-3 with the RBI at the plate.

UCO had seven hits in Game 2, with Minter's two leading the way.
