UCO Opens Homestand With Sweep of Lopers

EDMOND (April 21) – Jordyn Pipkin and Terin Ritz gave up seven combined hits in the pitching circle while Jacee Minter had five hits with three doubles as Central Oklahoma swept a doubleheader from Nebraska-Kearney Friday afternoon at Gerry Pinkston Stadium.

Pipkin tossed a two-hit masterpiece in a 5-0 first-game shutout, then Ritz followed with a five-hitter in a 4-2 second-game victory. UCO's offense racked up 19 hits on the day, with Minter's 5-for-7 outing at the plate leading the way.

The No. 5-ranked Bronchos improved to 37-6 on the season and 17-3 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play. UCO is back home Saturday for another conference twinbill, hosting Fort Hays State at noon on Alumni Day.

"Jordyn and Terin really threw well today," head coach Cody White said. "We hit the ball well, but left too many runners on base and we need to be better there.

"It will be another good challenge tomorrow against a good Fort Hays team and hopefully we come out ready to play."

Pipkin was virtually untouchable in the opener. The sophomore right-hander retired 15 of the first 16 batters she faced – giving up a lone walk in the second – before UNK managed its only two hits with one out in the sixth.

Pipkin went on to finish off the two-hit shutout for her 11th complete game of the season. She struck out five and walked just one, improving to 16-3.

UCO staked Pipkin to a quick lead in the bottom of the first, pushing across three run on four hits.

Emily Deramus got things going with a one-out single to left field and Amelya Huggins followed with a run-scoring double off the center field wall. Minter reached on an infield hit, the Ritz's towering fly ball to right field dropped in for a two-run triple to make it 3-0.

It stayed that way until the fifth when Deramus led off with a double down the left field line and Minter ripped an RBI double off the left field wall.

The Bronchos scored their final run in the sixth. Mikayla Rutland drew a one-out walk, Deramus walked with two outs and Rutland raced around to score on Huggins' single to left.

Minter went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles to lead a 10-hit attack. Deramus, Huggins and Ritz added two hits apiece.

Ritz scattered five hits in the nightcap while walking one batter and fanning a career-high 10. She got her final strikeout on the last batter of the game to cap a 121-pitch outing in improving to 14-1 on the year.

UCO took a 1-0 lead in the game in the second and Ritz helped her own cause with a lead-off single through the right side. Tatum Long walked and both advanced on a passed ball before Ritz scored on Rutland's perfectly place squeeze bunt.

The Lopers tied it in the third, but Central answered right back in the bottom of that inning when Minter blasted a towering drive over the center field wall for her ninth home run of the season and a 2-1 lead.

UCO made it 3-1 in the fourth on Deramus' two-out RBI single and Ritz helped herself again in the fifth with a solo shot, this one a deep drive to right field for her ninth homer of the season.

UNK scored its final run in the top of the sixth, but Ritz closed it out from there.

Minter and Ritz both went 2-for-3 to pace a nine-hit assault.
