Bronchos Fall at UNK

KEARNEY, Neb. – No. 28 Central Oklahoma dropped a close 4-3 decision to No. 44 Nebraska Kearney Sunday in an MIAA dual.

The Bronchos led 1-0, then 3-1, but a late rally by the host Lopers handed the Bronchos their second MIAA loss of the season.

"We ran into a problem that's been a theme for us this year, and unfortunately it cost us," UCO head coach Joe Vann said. "We're young and that inexperience has gotten the best of us a lot this season. We're learning and growing and we'll get better."

UCO won the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead in the match. Third-ranked Nikki Boyar and Blythe Buntrock suffered just their third loss of the season, but UCO got wins at No. 2 and No. 3 to get the point. Pete Komada and Nefeli Zafeiri won 6-3 and Tizia Brocks and Taylor Conway won 6-1 to get UCO the point.

Zafeiri and Brocks won quickly in singles play to get UCO to three points, but unfortunately for the Bronchos, UNK rallied and scored the rest of the points to get the win.

Buntrock lost 6-2, 7-5 at No. 1, Boyar lost 7-5, 6-4 at No. 4, and Karyna Yurchenko lost 6-2, 1-6, 3-6 at No. 5. Komada won her first set, 6-3, but lost the next two, 6-7, 3-6, to give Kearney the win.

UCO beat UNK 4-3 in Kearney at the ITA Indoor National Championships, but UNK got the best of the Bronchos on Sunday.

UCO, now 7-7 overall and 2-2 in the MIAA, will return home to face Washburn and Northwest Missouri next weekend in Edmond.
