No. 5 UCO Sweeps Savage Storm

DURANT, Okla. (April 18) – It wasn't always pretty, but No. 5-ranked Central Oklahoma found a way to sweep a non-conference doubleheader from Southeastern Oklahoma Tuesday afternoon in the final road games of the regular season.

The Bronchos exploded for nine runs in the eighth inning for a 12-3 first-game rout, then used a big double play in the seventh to hold on for a 1-0 shutout in the nightcap. UCO improved to 35-6 in stretching its winning streak over the Savage Storm to eight straight.

"We need to get on the bus as quick as we can and get out of here," head coach Cody White said. "We came out flat and not very focused and it almost cost us. Our intensity and attention to detail wasn't what it needed to be, but fortunately we made enough plays to get two good wins."

UCO overcame an early 2-0 deficit in the opener and then turned it into a runaway with its amazing eighth-inning outburst.

The Bronchos paraded 13 batters to the plate in taking control, with Shayla Harper collecting two of nine hits in the frame. The Durant native opened the inning with a single up the middle and Terin Ritz followed with a base hit before Tatum Long's RBI double off the right-center field wall broke a 3-3 tie.

UCO didn't stop there. Shayleigh Odom followed Long with a two-run double to left center and Mikayla Rutland's RBI single to left made it 7-3 with still no outs.

Emily Deramus continued the onslaught with a run-scoring single, Harper's second hit of the inning was a two-run bloop single to right and Ritz had a sacrifice fly before Makella Mobly's pinch-hit RBI single to left ended the scoring.

UCO tied a season high with 15 hits, with Harper and Huggins both going 3-for-5 while Odom and Ritz had two hits apiece.

Jordyn Pipkin, named MIAA Pitcher of the Week earlier in the day, went the full eight innings to pick up the win. She scattered four hits while striking out seven and walking one in moving to 15-3.

Southeastern scored two runs – one on an error – in the bottom of the first to take a quick lead, but the Bronchos tied it in the second. Ritz led off with a double off the wall and Odom followed with her third home run of the season, this one a deep fly over the right field wall.

UCO went up 3-2 in the top of the sixth when Huggins opened the inning with a solo shot off the scoreboard in left field for her fourth homer. The Savage Storm tied it with a solo homer of their own in the bottom of the inning and it stayed 3-3 until the Bronchos exploded.

Neither team scored in the second game until the top of the sixth when UCO pushed across the only run it would need.

Rylee Lemos started the inning with an infield second and Deramus reached on an error before Jacee Minter drove a ball up the middle to plate Lemos for the game-winning run.

Southeastern opened the bottom of the seventh with an infield hit, but the Bronchos – who lead NCAA Division II in fielding percentage at .981 – quickly turned a double play.

Second baseman Rutland started it by scooping up a hard-hit grounder before quickly pivoting to Deramus at second. The shortstop fielded Rutland's clean throw and then threw a dart to Long at first to compete rally-killing play.

Ritz then finished off the complete-game win by getting a final-out pop up back to the circle. The sophomore right-hander moved to 13-1, giving up eight hits while striking out five and not walking a batter.

UCO managed just four hits.

The Bronchos return to Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play this weekend, hosting Nebraska-Kearney Friday and Fort Hays State Saturday to open a season-ending eight-game homestand.
