No. 4 UCO Sweeps No. 8 Hillcats

CLAREMORE, Okla. (April 15) – A pair of dominating pitching outings gave Central Oklahoma head coach Cody White a birthday memory he won't soon forget Saturday afternoon in a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association showdown with Rogers State.

Jordyn Pipkin and Terin Ritz allowed four hits apiece in consecutive complete-game outings as the No. 4-ranked Bronchos swept a doubleheader from the defending national champion and No. 8-rated Hillcats.

Pipkin gave up just one seventh-inning run in a 4-1 first-game victory and Ritz overwhelmed RSU in a 4-0 second-game shutout. UCO improved to 33-6 on the season and 15-3 in conference play.

"We came out ready to play today," said White, the 10th-year skipper who was celebrating his 38th birthday. "Jordyn and Terin were unbelievable in shutting down a great offensive team and we came through with some clutch hits in both games.

"It's a great birthday present, no doubt about that. I'm really proud of the team for the focus and determination they showed today."

Pipkin hit the second batter she faced in the opener, then retired 12 straight before the Hillcats managed their first two hits in the fifth. Rogers scored its lone run in the bottom of the seventh, with Pipkin escaping a bases-loaded jam to close out her ninth complete game of the year.

The sophomore right-hander gave up four hits and two walks while striking out three in improving to 14-3 as the Bronchos ended RSU's eight-game winning streak.

UCO took a 1-0 lead in the second with three hits. Ritz had a one-out single through the left side, Shayleigh Odom drove a two-out single to right field and Mikayla Rutland followed with an RBI hit to center.

It stayed that way until the fifth when Shayla Harper rapped a two-out, run-scoring single to left field to score pinch-runner Makella Mobly, who had come in after Amelya Huggins' one-out single.

The Bronchos added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Huggins opened the inning with a double to center and Harper came through an out later with her 10th homer of the season, this one a shot over the center field fence.

Huggins went 3-for-4 to lead a 10-hit attack, while Harper and Odom added two hits apiece.

Ritz followed Pipkin's pitching gem with one of her own in the nightcap. The sophomore right-hander didn't allow a runner past first base while scattering four hits.

She didn't walk a batter, fanned one and needed just 74 pitches to record her seventh complete-game outing of the season in moving to 12-1.

Emily Deramus went 4-for-4 to lead a 10-hit attack, with six other players collecting one hit apiece.

UCO broke a scoreless tie in the third on Ritz's RBI groundout and added two more runs on an error to go ahead 3-0.

It stayed that way until the sixth. Deramus ripped a two-out triple to right-center, Huggins drew a walk and Minter drove a run-scoring single through the left the side to make it 4-0.

The Bronchos play their final road games of the regular season Tuesday with a 2 p.m. doubleheader in Durant against Southeastern Oklahoma, then opens an eight-game homestand next weekend.
