No. 4 Bronchos Sweep Newman

WICHITA, Kan. (April 1) – A dominating performance at the plate and in the pitching circle led No. 4-ranked Central Oklahoma to a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association doubleheader sweep of Newman Saturday afternoon.

The Bronchos banged out 23 hits – including 10 for extra bases – in scoring 16 runs, while a trio of pitchers gave up just nine hits and one run in 10-0 and 6-1 victories. UCO, now 27-4 overall and 9-1 in the league, has won 21 of its last 22 games.

"We played well today," head coach Cody White said. "Offensively we did a lot of good things and our pitchers were all really solid. We just need to keep working hard to get better every time we take the field."

UCO took control quickly in the opener, scoring four runs in each of the first two innings en route to ending the game after five on the eight-run rule.

Rylee Lemos and Emily Deramus opened the game in the top of the first with back-to-back singles and Jacee Minter reached on a fielder's choice that resulted in the second out. Harper followed with a two-run triple to right field, Terin Ritz walked and Long made it 4-0 with a two-run double to center.

The onslaught continued in the second, with Lemos drawing a one-out walk to get things going. Deramus followed with an RBI triple to right field, then Minter had a two-out, two-run homer and Shayla Harper followed with a solo shot to give UCO an 8-0 cushion.

Mikayla Rutland led off the third with an infield single and scored on Lemos' double to left field and the Bronchos made it 10-0 in the fourth. Minter started that frame with a single and ended up scoring on an error after Brooke Niver's pinch-hit double to left field.

Lemos, Deramus, Minter and Harper had two hits each to pace a 12-hit attack, with seven of those going for extra bases.

Jordyn Pipkin went the first three innings in the circle to pick up the pitching win, giving up two hits and no walks while striking out three to improve to 11-2. Corrina Rivas closed the game with a pair of shutout innings, giving up two hits.

UCO jumped out to an early lead in the second game as well, going up 2-0 in the top of the first with help from a couple of Newman errors. The Jets got a run back in the bottom of the first, but the Bronchos answered with three more in their next at bat.

Long led off the second with a double and stole third before Makella Mobley reached on an infield single. Mobley went to second and Long was thrown out at home on an attempted double steal, but Rutland followed with a two-run homer and Deramus added a two-out solo shot to make it 5-1.

The Bronchos scored their final run in the fourth. Minter had a one-out single and stole second before going to third on a groundout and scored on Ritz's base hit to left field.

Minter went 3-for-4 to pace an 11-hit attack, while Harper had two hits. Ritz earned the pitching win, giving up four hits and one run in the first six innings before Rivas threw a flawless seventh.

UCO returns home next weekend to host Lincoln and Central Missouri for back-to-back doubleheaders April 7 and 8.
