No. 9 Bronchos Win Two At Drury Classic

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (March 5) – No. 9-ranked Central Oklahoma polished off a perfect 4-0 weekend at the Drury Classic Sunday with a 14-6 drubbing of Nebraska-Kearney and 7-3 triumph over the host Panthers.

The Bronchos beat Minnesota-Crookston and Augustana by identical 8-1 scores Saturday before taking Sunday's two wins. UCO improved to 14-3 on the season and has now won eight straight games.

"It was a great weekend for us," head coach Cody White said. "We beat some good teams and played pretty well in all phases. We've built some good momentum and need to have a good week of practice to get ready for the conference schedule."

The Bronchos open Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play next weekend, going to Emporia State and Washburn for back-to-back doubleheaders.

Tatum Long drove in five runs to lead UCO in the opener against MIAA rival UNK in what was a non-conference game. It was a back-and-forth battle early and the two were deadlocked 6-6 before the Bronchos exploded for eight sixth-inning runs in earning the run-rule victory.

Long had a two-run double in the top of the second to put UCO on top, but the Lopers scored four times in the bottom of the frame to take a 4-2 lead and UNK was ahead 5-3 after three.

Rylee Lemos tripled and scored on an error in the fourth, then Long ripped another two-run double in the fifth to give the Bronchos a 6-5 advantage.

The Lopers pulled even with a solo homer in the bottom of the fifth, but UCO took charge in its next at bat.

Jacee Minter had a two-run single and Emily Deramus a two-run double, while Lemos and Amelya Huggins added RBI hits in the big eight-run inning.

That made it 14-6 and UNK had no answer in the bottom of the frame.

Lemos had three hits to lead a 12-hit attack, with Deramus, Huggins and Long adding two each. Jordyn Pipkin earned the pitching win with four innings of relief work.

UCO took control quickly against Drury, erupting for five runs in the top of the first.

Lemos and Deramus opened the inning with back-to-back doubles, then Huggins walked. Shayla Harper drew a one-out free pass to load the bases for Terin Ritz, who promptly emptied them with a massive drive over the right field wall for a grand slam that made it 5-0.

Drury scored all three of its runs in the second to get within 5-3 and it stayed that way until the fourth when Shayleigh Odom led off with a solo homer to right.

The Bronchos added an insurance run in the seventh on Huggins' sacrifice fly that scored Deramus, who started the inning with a triple to right field.

UCO finished with eight hits, getting two apiece from Deramus and Ritz. Corrina Rivas started and went the first four innings to earn the win, while Pipkin threw the final three frames to pick up the save.
