No. 6 Bronchos Sweep Emporia State

EMPORIA, Kan. (March 10) – No. 6-ranked Central Oklahoma opened its Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association schedule with a doubleheader sweep of Emporia State Friday.

The Bronchos ended ESU's six-game winning streak with a 5-1 first-game victory, then overcame a 2-0 deficit to win 7-2 in the nightcap. UCO improved to 16-3 in stretching its winning streak to 10 straight.

Central moves on to Topeka, Kan. Sunday to take on No. 18 Washburn (23-3) in a 12 p.m. doubleheader. The defending league champion Ichabods have won 15 in a row.

"We came out with two good wins today," head coach Cody White said. "We did a lot of things right and I was proud of the way we hung in there after getting behind in the second game. It doesn't get any easy tomorrow and we'll have to be at our best."

Jordyn Pipkin was virtually untouchable through six innings and then survived some shaky moments in the bottom of the seventh in leading UCO's first-game win.

The junior right-hander retired the first 14 batters before giving up a two-out single in the fifth and was working on a one-hitter entering the final inning. Pipkin walked two and allowed three hits as the Hornets scored their lone run before finally closing out the game.

Pipkin struck out six and finished with a four-hitter in improving to 6-1 with her fourth complete game of the season.

Emily Deramus went 3-for-4 at the plate and Rylee Lemos had two hits to pace a nine-hit attack.

The Bronchos broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth  when Shayla Harper reached on a fielder's choice, advanced on Terin Ritz's single and scored on an error.

Lemos and Deramus started a three-run uprising in the fifth with back-to-back singles and Amelya Huggins moved both runners with a sacrifice bunt. Jacee Minter walked to load the bases for Harper, who singled through the left side to score two, and Tatum Long added a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0.

UCO's final run came in the seventh. Minter drew a lead-off walk and pinch-runner Makella Mobly stole second before Long ripped an RBI double to left-center.

The Hornets took a 2-0 lead in the second inning of the nightcap, with UCO getting one run back in the third on Minter's RBI single before moving in front in the fifth with a pair of runs.

Lemos started that inning with an infield single, then consecutive walks to Huggins, Minter and Harper plated the first run. Ritz followed with a sacrifice fly to put the Bronchos on top 3-2.

UCO added four more scores in the seventh to put the game away.

Minter led off with a solo home run to right field, with Mikayla Rutland adding a two-run single and Shayleigh Odom an RBI base hit.

The Bronchos finished with nine hits, getting two apiece from Lemos and Minter.

Corrina Rivas earned the pitching win in relief. The senior right-hander threw three shutout innings, giving up just one hit and one walk.
