No. 4 Central Oklahoma Sweeps SNU

EDMOND – No. 4 Central Oklahoma snuck past Southern Nazarene in the first game of its midweek non-conference doubleheader Tuesday at Gerry Pinkston Stadium before putting on a hitting clinic in a run-rule victory in the second game.

UCO improved to 25-4 on the season with the sweep after winning 3-2 and 11-1 in the doubleheader.

"We played well in the first game, but just couldn't string anything together," UCO head softball coach Cody White said. "We did in the second game and that's where you see the runs, putting a few hits together and making it happen."

Jordyn Pipkin improved to 10-2 in the circle with a complete game win in Game 1. The junior right-handed pitcher threw all seven innings, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk. She struck out four in the game.

Pipkin and the Bronchos fell behind 1-0 in the top of the third inning, but UCO responded with a solo home run to tie the game, and then a double steal gave Central a 2-1 lead in the bottom half. The Bronchos added one more in the bottom of the fourth to take a 3-1 lead. Pipkin gave up the second SNU run in the top of the seventh with two outs, but got the final out on the next play to get the win.

Terin Ritz took to the circle in Game 2 and also picked up a complete game win to improve to 8-0 on the season. Ritz threw six innings and gave up one unearned run on two hits and a walk. She struck out three in the game.

Ritz didn't have to go back out for the top of the seventh after she hit a walkoff grand slam to give UCO the 11-1 lead and run-rule victory in the bottom of the sixth inning.

UCO trailed 1-0 in the second game too after SNU scored in the top of the first. But the Bronchos put up five runs in both the third and sixth innings in taking over the game.

Riley Lemos doubled in the third to score Mikayla Rutland and tie the game, 1-1. Then Jacee Minter blasted a three-run home run to left field to score Lemos and Emily Deramus and make it 4-1. Tatum Long also doubled in the inning and scored Shayla Harper to push the lead to 5-1.

Long had back-to-back RBI doubles, doing it again in the fifth to score Ritz and give the Bronchos a 6-1 lead.

In the sixth, Deramus doubled to left and scored Lemos, then Ritz hit the walkoff grand slam, scoring Deramus, Rylee Anglen, and Harper, to make it 11-1.

Harper went 2-for-3 in Game 1 while Amelya Huggins and Rutland both had doubles. Long went 1-for-2 with a solo home run. In Game 2, Lemos, Deramus, Harper and Long all hit doubles while Minter and Ritz pelted homers.

Central Oklahoma is back on the road this weekend, but only has one MIAA doubleheader on the schedule. The Bronchos play at Newman Friday at 2 p.m. in Wichita, Kansas.
