UCO Tops Missouri Western

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma cruised to a 5-2 win over Missouri Western Saturday afternoon in the first MIAA home dual of the season for the Bronchos.
 
UCO improved to 6-6 overall on the year with the win and the Bronchos are now 1-1 in the MIAA.
 
"We played a lot better than we have been and that's a good sign," UCO head women's tennis coach Joe Vann said. "It was a beautiful day out and to be on our home court was good. The team played really well. We need to learn how to make this our consistent level."
 
UCO got a 1-0 lead in the match by winning the doubles point. Saturday's three doubles contests were each unusally won by a score of 7-6. Central Oklahoma got wins at No. 1 and No. 2 while Missouri Western picked up the win at No. 3, all by the same score.
 
In singles play, Missouri Western tied the match, 1-1, with a win at No. 1 singles. Blythe Buntrock played the top spot in the lineup for the first time in her career and had to face nationally ranked Anya Chavez from MWSU. She lost 3-6, 0-6.
 
Nefeli Zafeiri responded for the Bronchos though and put UCO back in front, 2-1, with a win at No. 3 singles. She posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory.
 
The match was tied again however, 2-2, when MWSU's Anais Peralta beat Tizia Brocks, 7-5, 6-2 at No. 5 singles.
 
Fortunately for the Bronchos, the rest of the afternoon went the Central way.
 
Nikki Boyar picked up a three-set win at No. 4 singles before Karyna Yurchenko did the same at No. 6 singles. Boyar won 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 while Yurchenko won 6-2, 2-6, 6-1.
 
Pete Komada added a three-set win of her own to reach the final score for the Bronchos. Playing at No. 2 singles for the first time this season, the freshman won 7-6, 3-6, 6-2.
 
UCO will hit the road again next weekend, taking on MIAA foes Fort Hays State and Nebraska Kearney before returning for two MIAA contests in Edmond in two weeks.
