No. 6 UCO Powers Past No. 18 Washburn

TOPEKA, Kan. – No. 6 Central Oklahoma outlasted No. 18 Washburn in a Top 25 slugfest and then the Bronchos run-ruled the host Ichabods in the second game to sweep the MIAA doubleheader Sunday afternoon.

Central Oklahoma won 12-10 in Game 1 before a 10-2 six-inning run-rule in Game 2.

"We played really well on offense today," UCO head softball coach Cody White said. "We didn't love giving up so much in the first game, but our team had each other's backs and found a way to score enough runs to get the win. Then we played a lot better all-around in Game 2. It was good to see that from the team against a good Washburn team."

Washburn jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning of Game 1 Sunday, with a double, a walk, and a three-run home run for the first three batters of the game. Washburn scored once more later in the inning, but UCO had an answer.

The Bronchos took a 7-4 lead in the second with a big rally that started with a Jacee Minter leadoff home run to left center. Three walks and two outs followed, but UCO wasn't done. Rylee Lemos knocked an RBI single to left to score Shayla Harper and Emily Deramus drew a bases-loaded walk to score Tatum Long. Then Ameyla Huggins blew it open with a grand slam, scoring Mikayla Rutland, Lemos and Deramus, and giving UCO a 7-4 lead.

The game stayed that way until the bottom of the fourth when Washburn got another three-run home run from its star, Jaycee Ginter. UCO again had a response.

Deramus hit a two-RBI single to score Shayleigh Odom and Makella Mobly and give UCO a 9-7 lead in the fifth. Washburn made it 9-8 in the bottom of the fifth, then UCO kept the back-and-forth going in the sixth.

Long had the bases loaded and reached on a fielder's choice when Washburn got Rilee Anglen out at home, but wild throw followed and Minter came around to score and make it 10-8, Bronchos.

Odom followed with a single and scored Harper to make it 11-8. Washburn answered again to cut it to one, 11-10, but the Bronchos got one last run in one swing of the bat when Deramus belted a solo home run to center field to give Central Oklahoma the 12-10 lead.

UCO had 10 hits in Game 1, including a double by Lemos and three home runs from Minter, Huggins and Deramus.

Jordyn Pipkin started for UCO but was relieved after four batters in the first inning. She gave up four runs on two hits and two walks. Corrina Rivas followed and also gave up four runs on six hits and two walks. Rivas did strike out six Washburn batters in four innings of work. Terin Ritz threw the final three innings and gave up two runs on three hits and one walk. She had one strikeout.

Game 2 had some big innings as well, and fortunately for the Bronchos, they all came in the top half of the innings.

Washburn again took an early lead with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first to go up 1-0. But UCO took control in the third inning.

Rutland led off with a solo homer to right field to tie the game, then Harper hit a triple to right field and scored Huggins and Minter to give UCO a 3-1 lead. Harper scored on a wild pitch after that to make it, 4-1.

In the fifth, Deramus scored on a Washburn error to put it up to 5-1, then Ritz doubled down the right field line to score Minter and make it 6-1. Long kept it going with a two-out single where Ritz scored to make it 7-1.

Rutland belted her second home run of the game in the top of the sixth inning to make it 8-1. Then Huggins hit her second of the day, scoring Deramus and herself with one swing of the bat, and giving UCO a 10-1 lead.

Washburn got one back in the bottom of the sixth, but couldn't get it within eight to prevent the run rule.

UCO had 10 hits again in Game 2, with half of them going for extra bases.

Pipkin pitched all six innings and allowed two runs on six hits and two walks. She struck out two in the complete-game win.

UCO continues a near month-long road trip next weekend. The Bronchos will be in Joplin, Missouri for the MIAA/NSIC Crossover. Central will play Concordia St. Paul, Winona State, Northern State, and Sioux Falls over the six-games in three-days event.
