Bronchos Sweep Northwestern

EDMOND (March 1) – A pair of freshmen provided a big spark at the top of the lineup to propel Central Oklahoma to a doubleheader sweep of Northwestern Oklahoma Wednesday afternoon at Gerry Pinkston Stadium.

The No. 9-ranked Bronchos – playing their first game since Feb. 19 -- overcame 2-0 deficits in both games, claiming an 11-3 run-rule victory in the opener before pulling out a 6-3 decision in the nightcap. UCO improved to 10-3 with the wins.

Rookies Rylee Lemos and Emily Deramus were the offensive catalysts, combining for nine hits, five runs scored and four runs batted in from the first two spots in the lineup. Lead-off hitter Lemos went 4-for-7 with three runs and two RBI, while Deramus followed her to the plate and was 5-for-7 with two runs and two RBI.

"Rylee and Emily gave us a big lift today, but they've been doing that from the start," head coach Cody White said. "They're not your typical freshmen and do a lot for us, both offensively and defensively.

"We didn't play our best today. It's been awhile since we played a game and that showed. But we did what we needed to do and came out with two good wins."

The Bronchos fell behind 2-0 in the top of the first of the opener, but responded quickly with a five-run volley in their first at bat.

Deramus got things going with a one-out double down and ended up scoring on Jacee Minter's single through the right side. Amelya Huggins drew a two-out, bases-loaded walk to force in a run, Kinlee Riley plated two more with a bloop single to right field and UCO scored another run on an error to go up 5-2.

It stayed that way until the fourth, when the Bronchos upped its lead to 9-2.

Deramus scooted home on a wild pitch after starting the inning with a double down the line, Lemos and Shaylin Midgley had RBI singles and Minter drove in the final run with a groundout.

The Rangers pushed across one run in the top of the fifth and UCO answered back with single scores in the fifth and sixth.

Rutland made it 10-3 in the fifth with an RBI single to left-center and Huggins had a run-scoring single to right in the sixth to end the game on the eight-run rule.

UCO finished with 15 hits, getting three each from Riley and Deramus. Lemos, Minter and Huggins added two apiece.

Jordyn Pipkin picked up the pitching win, giving up four hits and two earned runs in the first 4 1/3 innings. Corrina Rivas allowed one hit in 1 2/3 shutout innings.

The Rangers grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the third of the nightcap, with UCO getting one run back in its half of that inning when Lemos led off with a triple to right-center and trotted home on Deramus' sacrifice fly.

The Bronchos tied it in the fourth in crazy fashion when Shayla Harper reached on an infield single and the speedy senior raced all the around to score as NWOSU made two consecutive throwing errors on the play.

UCO broke the 2-2 deadlock with a four-run outburst in the sixth. Lemos and Deramus had back-to-back RBI singles to put the Bronchos on top, Huggins added a sacrifice fly and another run scored on an error to make it 6-2.

The Rangers scored once in the top of the seventh and had two runners on with one out when Rivas went to the circle in relief of Terin Ritz. The senior struck out the first batter on three pitches, then Deramus speared a hard-hit grounder and fired a strike to Harper at third to get a force out that ended the game.

Lemos, Deramus and Rylee Anglen had two hits apiece to pace the offense. Ritz gave up seven hits in 6 1/3 innings to earn the pitching win, with Rivas picking up the save.

The Bronchos return to action this weekend, traveling to Springfield, Mo. for four games in the Drury Classic.
