UCO Topples No. 3 Patriots To Earn Final-Day Split

CONROE, Texas (Feb. 5) -- Jacee Minter drove in three runs with a pair of doubles and No. 8-ranked Central Oklahoma knocked off No. 3 Texas-Tyler 9-5 in the final game of the Division II Spring Invitational Kickoff Sunday afternoon.

The Bronchos bounced back in impressive fashion after getting no-hit in a 2-0 loss to St. Mary's to start the day, pounding out 10 hits against the Patriots to finish 4-2 in the three-day event that opened the 2023 season. UCO is off until hosting the Raising Cane's Festival Feb. 17-19.

"It was a great way to end the weekend," head coach Cody White said. "We went through a gauntlet and I'm really proud of the way we finished strong. We learned a lot about ourselves and can build off what we did this weekend."

The Bronchos never trailed against Tyler, which made it to the semifinals of the NCAA Division II World Series last year. UCO scored twice in the top of the first, then pushed across five runs in the second to go up 7-1 before holding on down the stretch.

Emily Deramus got the Bronchos going in the first with a one-out single to right field, Terin Ritz followed with a base hit up the middle to move Deramus to third and she scored when Minter reached on a fielder's choice. Shayla Harper then plated Ritz with a groundout to make it 2-0.

Tyler got a run back in its first at bat, then Central took control with a five-run outburst in the second.

Tatum Long led off the inning with a double to right-center, Korbyn Skipworth walked and two straight wild pitches allowed Long to score. Mikayla Rutland and Rylee Lemos drew back-to-back walks to load the bases for Deramus, who drove an RBI single to right field. Minter came through one out later with a two-run double to right-center and Harper's sacrifice fly pushed UCO's lead to 7-1.

The Bronchos made it 8-1 in the sixth when Lemos drove a two-out single up the middle, then stole second and scored on an error.

The Patriots scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it 8-4, but UCO got a run back in the top of the seventh. Minter led off with a double to right-center and Amelya Huggins delivered a one-out RBI single to right.

Tyler scored once in its final at bat to get within 9-5 and had two runners on base when Ritz, who came on in relief of starter Corrina Rivas in the sixth, got the final out to close out the big win.

Deramus, Minter and Long had two hits apiece to pace the offense. Rivas earned the pitching win, allowing six hits and four runs in 5 2/3 innings while striking out two.
