Early Homers Spark Bronchos Past Arkansas Tech

EDMOND (Feb. 17) – Emily Deramus and Amelya Huggins smacked first-inning home runs to put Central Oklahoma in control and the No. 6-ranked Bronchos went on to topple Arkansas Tech 8-3 Friday afternoon in the Raising Cane's Festival at Gerry Pinkston Stadium.

Deramus had a two-run homer and Huggins added a three-run shot later in UCO's initial at bat to give the Bronchos a 5-1 lead and the game was never in doubt.

It was the home opener for UCO, which improved to 5-2 and was set to take on East Central in the final game of the day.

Shayla Harper went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles to lead an 11-hit attack, while Deramus and Rylee Lemos had two hits apiece. Terin Ritz came on in relief to pick up the pitching win, giving up three hits and one run in five innings.

ATU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Bronchos needed just two pitches to move back on top.

Lemos led off the bottom of the inning with a first-pitch single through the left side and Deramus deposited the first offering she saw over the right-center field wall for a two-run home run.

Ritz drew a walk to keep things going and Harper drove a one-out double to right-center before Huggins went deep, smacking a high fly to right-center for a three-run shot that made it 5-1.

The Golden Suns got a run back in the top of the second and it stayed 5-2 until the fourth when UCO pushed across another run.

Mikayla Rutland roped a double to the left-center field gap to start the inning, moved to third on Lemos' groundout and trotted home on Deramus' sacrifice fly to left field.

ATU made it 6-3 in the top of the sixth with a single score, but the Bronchos came back with two runs in the bottom of that frame.

Karson Jennings led off with a pinch-hit single, Rutland followed with a sacrifice bunt and Lemos delivered an RBI double down the left field line. Ritz aided her own cause with a two-out run-scoring single through the left side to push the cushion to 8-3.

The Bronchos benefitted from several stellar defensive plays. Jacee Minter made a diving grab on a line drive to left field to end the second and save a run, while Harper had a nifty stop on a hard-hit grounder to third and Tatum Long snared a laser shot at first in the fifth.

Two more came in the sixth. Ritz fell while knocking down a shot back to the circle, but scrambled to her feet and made the throw to first for the first out and Shayleigh Odom made a mad dash to shallow center field to end the inning with a diving catch.
