Tigers Run Past UCO

EDMOND (Feb. 4) – A myriad of opening-game misses and Fort Hays State's hot start put Central Oklahoma in an big hole and the Bronchos never recovered Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Field House.

UCO hit just 2-of-20 shots in the first quarter while the Tigers nailed four of their first five 3-point tries in taking early control en route to a 91-62 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association victory.

The Bronchos dropped to a 7-14 on the season and 4-13 in league play. FHSU improved to 18-7 and 13-4.

"We came out slow and Fort Hays couldn't miss early," head coach Emma Andrews said. "We just couldn't buy a bucket, especially in the first quarter. Fort Hays has a good team and they proved that today."

UCO ended up shooting just 31.9 percent (22-of-69) from the field for the game, making only 6-of-27 attempts (22.2 percent) from beyond the arc.

The Tigers made five of their 12 treys in the opening 10 minutes and Megan Earney ended up hitting seven to tie a Hamilton Field House record. Earney scored a game-high 21 points after entering the contest averaging just 4.6 for the season.

Brooke Rayner paced the Bronchos with 22 points, making 8-of-18 shots with three 3-pointers. The senior guard added five rebounds, three assists and three steals.

River Romine was the only other player in double figures, finishing with 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting with a pair of treys. Karly Wadsworth chipped in nine points.

FHSU led 19-7 after the first period and scored the first seven points of the second quarter to open up a 19-point lead (26-9). The Bronchos got no closer than 14 the rest of the way.
