Rivas Return Sparks No. 8 UCO

CONROE, Texas (Feb. 3) – It had been 624 days since Corrina Rivas last appeared in the pitcher's circle for Central Oklahoma, but you couldn't tell it from the senior's performance against St. Edward's in the Division II Spring Invitational Kickoff Friday afternoon.

Rivas – a second-team All-MIAA performer in 2021 who missed all of last season to injury -- allowed just two hits while striking out five and didn't walk a batter as the No. 8-ranked Bronchos posted a 9-1 run-rule rout after five innings.

It gave UCO a 2-0 start to the season, with the Bronchos set to play four more games over the next two days.

"I'm so proud of what Corrina was able to come out and do today," said head coach Cody White, who picked up his 350th win at UCO with Friday's 13-9 season-opening victory over Angelo State. "She hasn't pitched in a really long time and was obviously a little nervous, but she was great out there."

Rivas last pitched for the Bronchos on May 20, 2021. She suffered a torn ACL during fall workouts and missed the 2022 campaign, but earned a hardship ruling and opted to take a second chance at her senior season.

The hard-throwing right-hander is off to a superb start. The Hilltoppers managed just one third-inning run on their only two hits and Rivas retired the final seven batters, snaring the final out herself on a harmless pop out to the circle.

UCO backed Rivas with an 11-hit attack, breaking the game open with six runs in the fourth.

The Bronchos broke on top 1-0 in the second when Shayla Harper led off with an infield single, went to second on an error and third on a groundout before scoring on Korbyn Skipworth's sacrifice fly.

SEU tied it with a solo run in the top of the third, but UCO went back in front in its next at bat. Mikayla Rutland started the inning with a single and Rylee Lemos drew a walk before Emily Deramus ripped a two-run double to left field to make it 3-1.

Harper got the Bronchos going again in the fourth with a lead-off single, then Amelya Huggins and Skipworth followed with base hits to load the bases for Tatum Long, who plated two runs with a double to left-center. UCO later added a two-run single by Deramus and RBI hits by Lemos and Jacee Minter in going ahead 9-1.

Lemos, Deramus and Harper finished with two hits apiece to lead the offense.

"It was a good start for us," White said. "We hadn't been outside in almost a week, but I though we swung the bats well and made some things happen. We beat two pretty good teams today."
