Ritz, Harper Power Bronchos Past Angelo State

CONROE, Texas (Feb. 3) – Terin Ritz and Shayla Harper combined for four home runs and seven runs batted in to lead No. 8-ranked Central Oklahoma past No. 18 Angelo State 13-9 Friday morning in the season-opening Division II Spring Invitational Kickoff.

The two sluggers each belted two homers, with Ritz knocking in four runs and Harper finishing with three RBI while going 3-for-3 at the plate. The Bronchos also got a two-run homer from Emily Deramus in the slugfest.

UCO will play St. Edward's next in the three-day event, before returning for two games both Saturday and Sunday at the Scrap Yard Sports Complex.

The Bronchos battled from behind twice in the contest, using the long ball both times.

Angelo took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first only to see UCO come back with four runs in its first at bat.

Rylee Lemos reached on an error to start the inning, then Deramus – in her first collegiate at bat – launched a two-run homer to left-center field. Ritz followed with a solo shot to left and Harper made it 4-2 an out later with a drive over the left-center field wall.

The Rambelles got a run back in the third and Central answered that in the fourth when Harper led off with a single, raced all the way to third on a passed ball and scored on Shayleigh Odom's groundout.

ASU pushed across five runs in the top of the fifth to regain the lead at 8-5, but it was short-lived as the Bronchos erupted for eight runs in their half of the inning.

Ritz had a big blow with a three-run homer to left-center and Harper delivered a two-run bomb to straightaway center field. UCO also got a two-run double from Tatum Long and sacrifice fly from Mikayla Rutland to go up 13-8.

The Rambelles threatened in their final out, loading the bases with two outs and getting one run across before UCO was able to get the final out.

Jordyn Pipkin earned the pitching win in relief of Ritz. The sophomore newcomer gave up two runs while striking out two in the final 2 1/3 innings.

The Bronchos finished with nine hits.
