Bronchos Fall In ITA Quarterfinals

KEARNEY, Neb. – Central Oklahoma opened the 2023 ITA Indoor National Championships Friday with a 4-0 setback to North Georgia in the quarterfinals.
 
UCO, the No. 2 seed in the eight-team tournament, will play sixth-seeded Flagler on Saturday at 8 a.m. Flager lost to (3) St. Leo, 4-2, on Friday morning.
 
"We were close," UCO head women's tennis coach Joe Vann said. We were close to getting the doubles point and our three singles losses were all close. As we keep growing and learning, we're getting better."
 
UCO got a win from its top-rated doubles team of Nikki Boyar and Blythe Buntrock. The nationally ranked No. 4 duo won 6-3 at the top spot in the lineup. But UCO would lose by the same score at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to give North Georgia the point.
 
North Georgia took the 1-0 lead to Singles play and picked up wins at the No. 1, No. 3, and No. 5 positions to take the victory and move to the national semifinals.
 
Pete Komada lost her first set at No. 1, 6-2. She battled back to fight for a third, but lost 7-5 in the second set.
 
Nafeli Zafeiri had a similar match the No. 3 position, falling 6-1 in the first set, battling through in the second, but ultimately losing, 7-5.
 
UNG got a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5 over Karyna Yurchenko.
 
Buntrock won her first set, 6-2, but dropped the second, 6-3, before ending unfinished at the No. 2 position. Boyar won 7-5 in the first set, then lost 6-0 in the second, before ending unfinished at the No. 4 position. Tizia Brocks lost her first set, 6-4, and was tied, 4-4, when her match ended unfinished at No. 6.
