Central Oklahoma Falls In ITA Indoor Consolation Semifinals

KEARNEY, Neb. – Central Oklahoma dropped its second match in as many days at the 2023 ITA Indoor National Championship Saturday morning with a 4-1 loss to Flagler College (Fla.).
 
UCO won the doubles point, but a response from Flagler in singles play turned the tables on the Bronchos.
 
"We were close again, which has been a theme so far this year," UCO tennis coach Joe Vann said. "We just need to figure out how to get over that hump and start winning some of those matches. It doesn't take much, but we're just not quite at that point."
 
Blythe Buntrock and Nikki Boyar continued there solid run to start the year at No. 1 doubles. The fourth-ranked duo won 7-5 and Nefeli Zafeiri and Pete Komada won 6-3 at No. 3 doubles to give UCO that early point. Tizia Brocks and Karyna Yurchenko were tied, 5-5, at No. 2 doubles when their match went unfinished.
 
But when play turned to singles, the match turned for the Bronchos.
 
Buntrock lost 6-1, 6-2 in 58 minutes at No. 2 Singles to allow Flagler to tie the match, 1-1. Brocks fell 6-0, 6-3 at No. 6 Singles and UCO was behind. Then Komada lost 0-6, 6-1, 1-6 at No. 1 Singles and Boyar lost 6-3, 7-5 at No. 4 Singles to end the match with the Bronchos behind 4-1.
 
Zafeiri was down 6-3, 6-5 when her match at No. 3 Singles went unfinished. Yurchenko won her first set 7-6 (8-6) and led 4-3 in the second set when the match ended.
 
Central Oklahoma, which is ranked No. 8 in the country and is the No. 2 seed in the ITA Indoor National Championship, will play host Nebraska Kearney Sunday at 8 a.m. in the seventh place match.
