No. 8 Bronchos Whip Southeastern

OKLAHOMA CITY – No. 8 Central Oklahoma got back in the win column Monday afternoon with a 7-0 win against Southeastern Oklahoma State in a non-conference match played at Lifetime Fitness.

UCO improved to 3-2 on the season with the win. SOSU is 2-3.

"We played well today and it was good to come back home and get a win after a close loss on the weekend," UCO head tennis coach Joe Vann said. "It was good to get right back out there and get a win so we can move forward to Indoor nationals on a good note."

Central Oklahoma moved up to No. 8 in the country last week but fell to No. 12 West Alabama in a tight 4-3 decision Saturday in Arkansas. Monday, UCO wasn't tested in the same manner.

The Bronchos jumped out to a 1-0 lead with doubles victories at all three positions.

Fourth-ranked Nikki Boyar and Blythe Buntrock won 6-2 at the top spot, and Karyna Yurchenko and Tizia Brocks (6-3) and Pete Komada and Nefeli Zafeiri (6-3) won the second and third spots respectively.

As the match turned to Singles play, UCO quickly got a 2-0 lead when Buntrock won by retirement at No. 2 Singles.

Boyar picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 4 Singles and Komada quickly followed with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 1 Singles and just like that, UCO had a 4-0 lead and the match.

Brocks added a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 6 Singles and Yurchenko won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5 Singles to make it 6-0 UCO. Zafeiri closed out the match with a three-set win at No. 4 Singles. She dropped the first set 4-6, but came back with a 6-4 win in the second set. She won the third-set tiebreaker, 10-8, to give UCO the 7-0 victory.

Central Oklahoma is heading to Kearney, Nebraska this weekend for the 2023 ITA Indoor National Championships. UCO hosted the first three editions of the event and finished seventh, third, and second in the eight-team tournament over the past three seasons.
