UCO Runs Past Bulldogs

EDMOND (Feb. 19) – Terin Ritz pitched a complete-game five-hitter and Central Oklahoma manufactured runs in a variety of ways to roll over Southwestern Oklahoma 9-1 in the final game of the Raising Cane's Festival Sunday afternoon at Gerry Pinkston Stadium.

Ritz struck out six and didn't walk a batter in going the distance in the circle, with the No. 6-ranked Bronchos ending the game on the eight-run rule in the sixth inning.

Emily Deramus went 3-for-3 to lead a seven-hit attack as UCO scored three runs on sacrifice flies, two on wild pitches and one each on a fielder's choice and an error in moving to 8-3 on the season with their ninth straight win over the Bulldogs. The Bronchos finished 4-1 in the three-day event, dropping a one-run decision to No. 16 Southern Arkansas.

"We weren't as sharp offensively as I would like, but we found a way to score runs and that's the main thing," head coach Cody White said. "Terin had a good game in the circle and our defense was solid behind her.

"It was a good weekend for us, even though we didn't play our best. It's early and the girls know we have a lot of work to do to get where we want to be."

UCO broke on top in the bottom of the first when Rylee Lemos walked to lead off, stole second, went to third on Deramus' single to left field and trotted home on Ritz's sacrifice fly.

The Bronchos pushed it to a 4-0 advantage in the second. Tatum Long and Kinlee Riley started things with back-to-back singles, then both advanced on Layne Smith's sacrifice bunt. One run scored on an error, Lemos added an RBI groundout and Rylee Anglen ended up scoring on a wild pitch.

UCO made it 6-0 in its next at bat. Ritz led off with a single through the right side and Jacee Minter doubled to left-center, then Shayla Harper plated Ritz with a fly out to right field and Minter raced home on a wild pitch.

The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth, but Central answered right back when Deramus belted her fourth home run of the season, this one a long two-out solo to left.

The Bronchos scored once in the fifth without a hit to push the lead to 8-1. Minter and Harper walked to start the inning, with Minter going to third on Long's long fly out before scoring on Riley's RBI fielder's choice.

UCO ended the game in the sixth in typical fashion for this game. Lemos reached second on a one-out error, moved to third on Deramus' single through the left side and scored on Minter's sacrifice fly to short right field.

The Bronchos don't return to action until hosting Northwestern Oklahoma for a 2 p.m. doubleheader on March 1.
