Bronchos Fall To Southern Arkansas

EDMOND (Feb. 18) – Central Oklahoma's late-game rally fell short and the No. 6-ranked Bronchos dropped a 9-8 decision to No. 16 Southern Arkansas Saturday afternoon on the second day of the Raising Cane's Festival at Gerry Pinkston Stadium.

The Muleriders erupted for six runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a seemingly comfortable 9-3 lead, but UCO battled back. The Bronchos scored once in the bottom of the fifth and four more times in the sixth to get within 9-8 before SAU closed out the game.

"We put ourselves in too big a hole and it's hard to overcome that against good teams," head coach Cody White said. "I was proud of the way we battled back, but we came up short."

UCO, now 6-3 on the season, finishes the three-day event Sunday with games against Southeastern Oklahoma (1 p.m.) and Southwestern Oklahoma (3:30 p.m.).

SAU scored once in the second and twice in the third to take a 3-0 lead, but the Bronchos quickly pulled even.

Amelya Huggins led off the bottom of the third with a single down the left line for UCO's first hit of the game, then Mikayla Rutland was hit by pitch with one out. Emily Deramus tied the game with one swing, blasting a no-doubt drive over the center field wall.

It stayed 3-all until the fifth when the Muleriders hit a grand slam and two-run homer to go ahead 9-3.

The Bronchos loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of that frame on back-to-back singles by Rutland and Rylee Lemos and an error, but managed just one run on Jacee Minter's RBI fielder's choice.

UCO got close with a four-run volley in the sixth.

Tatum Long, Huggins and Kinlee Riley drew consecutive walks to start the inning, then Lemos delivered a one-out, two-run single up the middle. Terin Ritz's two-out, two-run double off the right field wall pulled the Bronchos within 9-8.

But UCO couldn't complete the comeback.

The Bronchos finished with eight hits, getting two apiece from Lemos and Ritz. SAU managed 13 hits against three UCO pitchers.
