Bronchos Sweep Riverhawks

No. 10 Central Oklahoma Beat Northeastern State Saturday To Take The Season Series 2-0

EDMOND – No. 10 Central Oklahoma pulled away from Northeastern State midway through the first half and continued to do so before settling in on a 67-52 victory over Northeastern State Saturday evening.

Central Oklahoma improved to 23-3 on the season with the win and the Bronchos are now 17-3 in the MIAA.

UCO went back and forth with Northeastern for the first 10 minutes Saturday. There were five ties in the first 9:21 of game time and four lead changes in the first 9:59 of action. But when Camryn Givens knocked down a 3-pointer with 10:01 to play in the first half, the Bronchos took a 17-14 lead and UCO never trailed again.

That started a 10-2 run. Danquez Dawsey scored an and-1 layup to give the Bronchos a 24-16 lead with 8:17 to play. UCO added a 6-0 run moments later and led 30-18 with four minutes left in the first half.

Jalyn Turner scored a layup with 30 seconds left to give UCO a 34-24 lead and then had a big block as time expired to preserve the double-digit lead going to halftime.

Northeastern made a push in the second half, eventually cutting the lead to three points, 39-36, with just under 13 minutes left.

But UCO followed that with a put-it-away run.

Dawsey hit a 3-pointer, then had another and-1 layup, then Curtis Haywood did the same in opposite order. The 12-0 run put the Bronchos in front 51-36.

The Bronchos also added a 14-5 run after that to end the game.

Dawsey led all scorers in the game with 16 points, hitting 6 of 11 shots including two 3-pointers. He was also 2-for-2 from the free-throw line, and added four assists and three rebounds.

Haywood scored 14 points to go with six boards and five assists. Jaden Wells scored 12 points and had eight rebounds and one assist. Preston Aymond added eight points and nine rebounds.

Givens finished with seven points and four boards. Turner scored six to go with three boards. Luke Haasl added two points and five rebounds and Tre'Veon Ellis added two points as well.

Central Oklahoma has one week left in the regular season. The Bronchos play at Northwest Missouri Thursday night and at Newman Saturday afternoon.

UCO and Northwest are playing for the MIAA title on Thursday. If UCO wins, it positions itself for a share of the title. The two schools shared the title a year ago. If Northwest wins, the Bearcats win the title outright.

Central Oklahoma and Northwest Missouri are both locked into the top two spots in the MIAA Basketball Championship that begins March 1 in Kansas City.
