No. 9 Central Oklahoma Wins Home Opener

EDMOND – No. 9 Central Oklahoma celebrated its 2023 home opener with a 6-1 victory over UT Tyler Friday night at Edmond Center Court.

The Bronchos also picked up their first win of the season with the rout of the Lone Star Conference school.

"We played well tonight in both doubles and singles and it was good to see the team come through," UCO head women's tennis coach Joe Vann said. "UT Tyler is always a good team and we had to work for some of those matches. It was good to see the team fight for and win some matches."

Central Oklahoma got wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to earn that early point, then won the first three singles matches to clinch the match with a 4-0 advantage. The teams played through all six singles matches in the early season non-conference dual, where UCO settled on two more late victories.

The Bronchos are 1-1 on the season and will be back on the court at ECC Saturday at 4 p.m. against No. 19 Angelo State.

UCO got a 1-0 lead Friday thanks to wins from Tizia Brocks and Karyna Yurchenko (6-4) at No. 2 doubles and Nefeli Zafeiri and Pete Komada (6-0) at No. 3 doubles. Blythe Buntrock and Nikki Boyar also won 6-3 at No. 1 doubles after the Bronchos had taken the point.

In singles play, Brocks cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles to make it 2-0. Buntrock also finished quickly at No. 2 singles, picking up a 6-2, 6-2 victory to give UCO a 3-0 lead.

Zafeiri clinched the match with a win at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-4.

In the final three matches, Yurchenko made it 5-0 with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles, and Komada made it 6-0 with a three-set win at No. 1 singles, 5-7, 6-3, 10-4. Tyler picked up its only win of the night at No. 4 singles over Boyer, 3-6, 7-5, 8-10.
