No. 9 Central Oklahoma Tops No. 19 Angelo State

EDMOND – No. 9 Central Oklahoma picked up its first Top 25 win of the season Saturday night with a 5-2 victory over No. 19 Angelo State in a non-conference match at Edmond Center Court.

Central Oklahoma (2-1) won the doubles point and four of six singles matches over Angelo State (2-1).

"We played very well today as a squad," UCO head women's tennis coach Joe Vann said. "We did al the right things and made all the right plays against a talented team. I am very proud of our progress with all the players, but it's back to work next week to get ready for West Alabama."

UCO is scheduled for another Top 25 matchup with No. 18 West Alabama in Arkadelphia, Arkansas next Saturday.

This weekend, coming off a win over UT Tyler on Friday night, Central Oklahoma was strong in doubles play to get the match started.

Fourth-ranked Blythe Buntrock and Nikki Boyar cruised to a 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles and Nafeli Zafeiri and Pete Komada won 6-3 at No. 3 doubles to get the Bronchos the first point of the match. Tizia Brocks and Karyna Yurchenko dropped a close, 6-4 match at No. 2 doubles.

As the match turned to singles, UCO kept the pressure on.

Angelo tied the match with a win at No. 1 singles, but Buntrock put the Bronchos right back in front with a 7-5, 7-6 (5) win at No. 2 singles.

UCO then got wins at No. 3 and No. 5 to clinch the match. Zafeiri won in three sets at No. 3, 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-1, and Yurchenko won in a quick straight-set match at No. 5, 6-0, 6-4.

Boyar picked up one more point for the Bronchos with a three-set win at No. 4 singles. She won 4-6, 7-6, 11-9 to give UCO a 5-1 lead in the match. Brocks dropped her match at No. 6 singles, 4-6, 2-6 to give Angelo its only other point.

Central Oklahoma bounced back from its season opening loss to Division I North Texas last week with a pair of wins against Lone Star Conference schools this weekend in Edmond. UCO will take on West Alabama next Saturday morning.
