Bronchos Outpaced At Pitt State

Central Oklahoma Falls 95-76 In MIAA Road Game

PITTSBURG, Kan. – Central Oklahoma couldn't keep pace with a scorching Pittsburg State squad Saturday afternoon in MIAA play with the Bronchos falling 95-76 to the Gorillas at John Lance Arena.

Central Oklahoma fell to 2-8 overall with the loss and 1-3 in the MIAA. PSU is 8-1 overall and 3-1 in league play following the win.

Natalie Stice led the Bronchos with 19 points and made five 3-pointers. Karly Wadsworth added 18 points with four 3-pointers. Talia Pogi also got into double figures with 11 points and made three 3-pointers. Pitt State's Grace Pyle set a school record with 41 points, the first 40-point game in Pitt State history. She went 16-for-23 from the floor, including 8-for-13 from behind the 3-point line.

Saturday was the first time this season Central has made 10 or more 3-pointers. The Bronchos shot 39.4 percent overall and 46.4 percent from behind the arc, making 13 of 28 shots. UCO was also 7-for-14 from the free-throw line in the game.

Central Oklahoma ended the first quarter down by five, but the first frame was a back-and-forth affair. Pitt State opened the game on a 4-0 run before the Bronchos got it going with an 8-0 run. Caley Young knocked down a jumper and Stice and Wadsworth followed with 3-pointers to give Central an 8-4 lead three minutes into the action.

However, Pittsburg State followed with a 12-0 run over the next three minutes. UCO chipped away at the lead after that and trailed 22-17 after the first quarter.

The Bronchos saw a similar second quarter. Pitt State opened with a 9-2 run to extend its lead to 12, 31-19, but the Bronchos had a run waiting. Trailing 37-25 with five minutes left in the first half, Tayler Factor put in a layup that started a 10-0 run for UCO. Young also made a layup and Wadsworth hit a jumper before Stice knocked down another 3-pointer to put the Bronchos within two, 37-35.

A 7-0 run tied the game, 42-42, capped off by Pogi knocking down her second three of the game with 54 seconds to play. Pittsburg added two more with 30 seconds left and led 44-42 at halftime.

In the second half, the runs didn't come for the Bronchos. Pittsburg State shot 57.1 percent in the first quarter and 60 percent in the second, and then got better in the second half. The Gorillas shot 68.8 percent in the third quarter and were over 80 percent in the fourth quarter before ending the final frame at 61.5 percent.

Pitt State outscored the Bronchos 25-14 in the third and 24-14 in the fourth to pull away with the 95-76 victory.
