Bronchos Stumble Against Fort Hays State

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma got in a hole in the first quarter and couldn't recover as 16th-ranked Fort Hays State pulled away with an 84-66 MIAA win at Hamilton Field House Tuesday evening.
 
Central Oklahoma dropped to 2-10 on the season and 1-5 in MIAA play. FHSU is 10-1 overall and 5-1 in league play.
 
The Bronchos shot 41.1 percent from the floor, hitting 23 of 56 shots on Tuesday. The Bronchos were 4-for-17 from behind the arc, 23.5 percent, and 16-for-21 from the free-throw line, 76.2 percent.
 
LaKysia Johnson led the Bronchos with 15 points off the bench. The junior guard was 6-for-7 from the floor and 3-for-6 from the free-throw line. She also had three rebounds, three steals, and one assist.
 
Reagan Fox added 14 points in a start. She went 3-for-8 from the floor and hit one 3-pointer. Fox made all seven of her free-throw attempts. Fox had three rebounds, two assists and one steal.
 
Alena Wilson also scored in double figures. The junior put in 10 points to go with five rebounds. She was 5-for-6 from the floor. Karly Wadsworth, who scored nine points, added six steals in a stellar defensive effort.
 
Gracee Miller added seven points, Aliyah Llanusa scored four, and Talia Pogi added three points. Natalie Stice and Aspen Williston both scored two points for the Bronchos.
 
Central Oklahoma went back and forth with Fort Hays State in the early minutes of the game on Tuesday. The Bronchos got a 6-5 lead with Stice's jumper. But Hays followed with a 10-0 run and controlled the game from there.
 
The Bronchos trailed 21-12 at the end of the first quarter and 41-30 at halftime. Fort Hays added to its lead in both second half quarters as well in route to the win.
 
Central Oklahoma is done with the 2023 portion of its schedule. The Bronchos return in 2024 with two road games Jan. 4 & 6 at Emporia State and Washburn. UCO plays at home again Wednesday, Jan. 10 against Northeastern State.
