Bronchos Overwhelm Newman In 300th HFH Dual

Central Oklahoma Crushes Newman 40-5 In MIAA Opener

EDMOND – Two-time national champion Dalton Abney shined in his season debut to spearhead Central Oklahoma's technical fall avalanche that buried Newman 40-5 Sunday afternoon in the 300th dual at Hamilton Field House.

Abney needed just 1:38 to rack up a 19-4 technical fall at 197 pounds and the No. 4-ranked Bronchos also got five-point routs from 157 Gabe Johnson, 174 Jaxon Randall and Hvy Braden Morgan in their 18th straight home victory.

UCO added major decisions from 141 Dylan Lucas and 149 Antonio George, while 125 Guy Clevenger and 133 Peter Rolle pulled out tough wins. Anthony DesVigne added a forfeit as the Bronchos improved to 2-0 in winning their 19th consecutive Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association match.

"It was great to finally be home and we had a good day," said eighth-year head coach Todd Steidley, who improved to 88-12 with the Bronchos. "I thought our guys wrestled hard. We pulled out a couple of gritty wins early and did a lot of good things, but we still have a lot of work to do."

UCO improved to 234-63-3 at Hamilton Field House in its home debut.

Clevenger got the Bronchos started in the opening match, coming out on top in a wild scramble for a takedown with 1:15 left to break a 7-7 tie before hanging on for a 10-8 win.

Rolle prevailed 10-6 at 133 after overcoming a 6-1 first-period deficit. The junior tallied a four-point near-fall in the final seconds of the second stanza to get within 6-5, escaped early in the third to tie it and won it on a takedown with seven seconds left before tacking on a riding time point.

The third-ranked Lucas nearly scored a fall in the opening seconds after striking for a quick headlock, but ended up settling for a 10-0 shutout for his 10th straight win.

Goerge had four takedowns in a 15-6 rout at 149 and the second-rated Johnson followed with an impressive 17-0 shellacking, racking up a takedown and four near-falls to stop the match after just 2:26.

Newman notched its lone win at 165 and the Bronchos answered in dominating fashion, outscoring the Jets 21-0 in the final four bouts.

Randall got the closing surge going with a 15-0 technical fall at 174, using two takedowns, a pair of near-falls and two penalty points to end it midway through the second period.

Abney followed DesVigne's forfeit win with a takedown exhibition. The top-ranked senior standout struck for five takedowns and a near-fall in just 1:38 to rack up the 19-4 romp.

Morgan wrapped up the day with another first-period technical fall, scoring two takedowns and three near-falls in an 18-1 drubbing that took just 2:13.

UCO concludes the first semester schedule next weekend, traveling to Indianapolis for the prestigious Midwest Classic.
