UCO Opens With a Statement In Florida

No. 9 Central Oklahoma Beat No. 25 Mercyhurst In A Runaway

LAKELAND, Fla. – No. 9 Central Oklahoma opened the 2023-24 season Saturday afternoon with a blitzing performance in the Small College Basketball Hall of Fame Classic at Florida Southern.

No. 9 UCO 97, No. 25 Mercyhurst (Pa.) 58.

"I'm proud of the guys for coming out strong, that was a good way to start the season," UCO head men's coach Bob Hoffman said. "You really never know what you're going to get in the first game of the year, and for our guys to play at this level against another Top 25 team, we'll take it. They did a great job today."

Central Oklahoma forced a turnover on the first possession of the game and drew two foul shots on the other end. After Danquez Dawsey sank both of those, and the Bronchos got another stop, Luke Haasl scored in the paint off an offensive rebound to make it 4-0.

The game was never tied and there were no lead changes.

UCO led 15-4 when Mike Quick Jr. hit a 3-pointer. It was 31-15 when Parker Hannah made a fastbreak layup off a steal. Central led by as many as 22 in the first half and held a 48-30 halftime lead.

The Bronchos pushed the lead to 30 midway through the second half and eventually led by as many as 41 in the game.

Jaden Wells led the Bronchos with 20 points. The junior guard went 6-for-11 from the floor, 4-for-7 from behind the arc, and 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. Wells also had five steals in just 24 minutes of action on Saturday.

Haasl had 19 points to go with four rebounds. He went 8-for-8 from the floor and hit three free-throws. Dawsey chipped in a great all-around game with 16 points, six rebounds, and five assists. He went 6-for-7 from the floor and hit two 3-pointers.

Central Oklahoma went 32-for-50 from the floor as a team, hitting 64 percent of its shots. The Bronchos were 13-for-22 from 3-point range and 20-for-26 from the free-throw line.

Hannah scored 13 off the bench to give UCO four in double figures.

Matthew Willenborg added five points. Preston Aymond, Quick Jr., and Majok Majouk all scored four points. Jalyn Turner, Jarreth Ingram, and Evan Barber scored three, and Caiden Punt had two. Gunner Korstjens also had one point.

Central Oklahoma is in Florida for the Small College Basketball Hall of Fame Classic. There are 10 teams in the event and six are ranked in the Top 25, with three more receiving votes. The one team not is Cedarville (Ohio) and that's who the Bronchos have Sunday at 3:30 p.m. (Eastern).
