UCO Win Makes For Happy Thanksgiving

Central Oklahoma Beat Oklahoma Christian Wednesday For Its First Win Of The 2023-24 Season

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma earned its first win of the 2023-24 season Wednesday afternoon with an 89-75 victory over Oklahoma Christian to wrap up the Thanksgiving Classic at Hamilton Field House.

UCO improved to 1-5 on the season with the win. The game was also the final non-conference game of the year for the Bronchos, who begin their 22-game MIAA slate next week.

Central closed the first quarter on an 11-3 run and never looked back Wednesday, besting OC in nearly every facet of the game.

The Bronchos shot 47.1 percent from the floor, connecting on 33 of 70 total shots. UCO was 7-for-19 (36.8 percent) from behind the arc and 16-for-20 (80 pct.) from the free-throw line.

Five different Bronchos scored in double figures, led by Karly Wadsworth's 15 points. The sharp-shooting junior hit three 3-pointers to lead the way for the Bronchos. Wadsworth also led the team with three steals.

Caley Young and Natalie Stice both scored 13 points and Reagan Fox and Alena Wilson both scored 10 points. UCO had four of its five starters in double figures, with Talia Pogi adding five. Stice led six players off the bench as UCO outscored OC 36-34 from its reserves.

Wadsworth, Fox, and Stice each had a team-high four assists too as the Bronchos assisted on 22 of 33 made baskets.

Oklahoma Christian led 9-7 early in the contest Wednesday afternoon before Stice and Alexis Lewis scored back-to-back buckets to give the Bronchos the lead. The game was tied, 11-11 when Gracee Miller put the Bronchos back in front and started the 11-3 run to end the first quarter.

Central led 22-14 at the first break. UCO's offense remained consistent for all four quarters. The Bronchos put up 22 points in the first, 21 in the second, and then 23 in both the third and fourth quarters.

The Central defense did a good job of keeping OC down early, allowing 14 points in the first quarter and just 13 in the second quarter to take a 43-27 halftime lead. OC's offense performed better in the second half as the Eagles put up 22 in the third and 26 in the final frame.

Aspen Williston added eight points, five rebounds, and two blocked shots off the bench. Miller and Lewis both scored six points, with Lewis adding four rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Miller added two assists, one block and one rebound.

LaKysia Johnson (two) and Alexis Martin (one) also both scored to add to the 36 bench points for the Bronchos.
