UCO Loses Pace In Home Opener

Central Oklahoma Lost 99-72 To Texas A&M International In 2023-24 Home Opener

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma made its home debut Tuesday but a staggering third quarter from Texas A&M International left the Bronchos on the wrong side of a 99-72 contest at Hamilton Field House.

Central Oklahoma fell to 0-5 on the season with the loss. The Bronchos are back on the court Wednesday to take on Oklahoma Christian (1-2), which lost to Southeastern Oklahoma State (4-1) Tuesday at Hamilton before the UCO game. TAMUI (6-0) will play Southeastern Wednesday prior to the Bronchos and Eagles matchup at 1 p.m.

UCO saw a burst from International early in the first quarter. The Dust Devils from Laredo, Texas had a 5-0 lead before Karly Wadsworth hit a 3-pointer. Then TAMUI led 12-3 just 1:50 into the game.

But the Bronchos responded with a 10-1 run to take their first lead of the game, 15-13, on a pair of Alexis Lewis free-throws. Gracee Miller tied the game moments earlier with a jumper. UCO and International were tied, 24-24, at the end of the first quarter.

Texas A&M International started the second frame on a 5-0 run but when UCO got in front 35-33 on a Reagan Fox 3-pointer with 6:15 left before halftime, the Bronchos held firm from there. Central outscored the Dust Devils 10-4 to end the half and led 45-37 at halftime.

Then the blitz came.

Texas A&M International erased the eight-point deficit in 55 seconds to start the third quarter. The Dust Devils knocked down a jumper, forced a turnover, hit a 3-pointer, forced another turnover, and then hit another 3-pointer. Just like that it was 45-45.

By the third quarter media timeout, Central trailed 58-51. In that 5:11 window, the Bronchos were outscored 21-6. International led by as many as 12 points on three different occasions before the end of the quarter. The Dust Devils shot 12-for-15 from the floor in the third, including 5-for-6 from behind the 3-point line.

That trend continued in the fourth quarter. The Bronchos never got closer than 14 points in the final frame. International led by 30, 99-69, before Wadsworth hit her fourth 3-pointer of the night in the closing seconds.

UCO finished the game shooting 24-for-58 (41.4 pct.) overall, 7-for-21 (33.3) from behind the arc, and 17-for-22 (77.3) from the free-throw line.

Lewis led UCO with 19 points and nine rebounds. She was 6-for-7 from the floor and 7-for-10 from the free-throw line, adding two assists, one block and one steal.

Wadsworth added 14 points on 5 of 10 shooting. She hit 4 of 9 threes and added three rebounds, three steals, and two assists. Aspen Williston also scored in double figures with 11 points and she added three rebounds and three assists.

Caley Young scored eight points to go with six boards and four steals, Natalie Stice added six points, four assists and two steals, and Fox finished with five points and five assists. Miller also had five points and five steals to go with four rebounds. Talia Pogi and Alexis Martin both scored two points.
