UCO Places Nine At Lindenwood Open

ST. CHARLES, Mo. (Nov. 18) – Anthony DesVigne's runner-up finish at 184 pounds led a host of nine Central Oklahoma placers in the rugged Lindenwood Open Saturday.

UCO sent 14 individuals to the massive one-day tournament that attracted 593 wrestlers from 40 teams, including 11 Division I schools. Competition for both open and freshman-sophomore divisions was held on 13 mats at Robert F. Hyland Arena.

The Bronchos had 10 entries in the open division and six placed, with DesVigne posting a trio of bonus-point wins in securing the highest finish. Dylan Lucas was the consolation champion at 141, while 157 Gabe Johnson, 184 Garrett Wells and 197 Emmanuel Skillings took fourth and 125 Guy Clevenger fifth.

UCO had three placers in the freshman-sophomore division, paced by Jaxon Randall's third-place showing at 165. Dailey Jennings finished fifth at 141 and 174 Tucker Waitman was sixth, with both competing unattached.

"I thought our guys competed well," head coach Todd Steidley said. "It was a long day and an extremely tough tournament, but we battled hard. A lot of our guys hadn't wrestled much yet this year and it was a great test for them."

DesVigne is moving up a weight this season after earning All-America honors at 174 last year and had an impressive debut.

The senior opened the day with back-to-back technical falls, blitzing McKinley Kemper of Division I Lindenwood 17-1 before rolling over McKendree's Ryan Hayes 18-2. DesVigne made it three bonus wins in a row with a 9-1 semifinal major decision of Oklahoma State's Evan Shetley before falling in the finals to OSU's fourth-ranked Dustin Plott.

Lucas also had a stellar outing in seeing his first action of the season while moving up a weight following an All-America campaign at 133 last season.

He lost his first match following an opening-round bye, then reeled off four straight wins to take the consolation title. The junior scored 62 points in those wins, notching a 15-0 technical fall and 16-8 major decision along with 17-10 and 14-13 wins.

Johnson, UCO's third returning All-American in the field, went 3-2 in his fourth-place finish.

The sophomore followed a first-round bye with an 18-1 technical fall before falling in the quarterfinals. He bounced back with two straight major decisions, then dropped an overtime decision to OSU's Jalin Harper in the consolation finals.

Wells drew an opening bye, then pulled out a 2-0 quarterfinal win before losing to Plott in the semis. The redshirt freshman rebounded with a 16-0 technical fall, then fell 4-1 in sudden victory to Southern Illinois-Edwardsville's Deron Pullium in taking fourth.

Skillings went 3-2 on the day, earning a 14-1 major decision after a first-round bye before falling to OSU's Luke Surber. He came back with 16-2 and 9-8 wins to make the consolation finals before injury defaulting early in that match.

Clevenger followed an opening bye with a tight 6-5 win and third-period fall before losing in the semis to McKendree's Christian Mejia, ranked third in Division II. The redshirt freshman dropped a wild 17-11 decision in the consolation semis, then picked up a medical forfeit in the fifth-place bout.

Randall went 4-1 in taking third in the freshman-sophomore division at 165. The redshirt freshman had a first-period fall and 14-3 major decision in making the semis before losing there, then finished the tournament with an 18-3 technical fall and medical forfeit win.

Jennings won three straight matches in advancing to the semis, pulling out an 8-5 sudden-victory decision in his opener and a 5-4 victory in the quarters. The freshman lost his next two matches before rolling to an 11-2 major decision in the fifth-place match.

Waitman outscored two opponents a combined 40-7 in claiming two straight technical falls after an opening bye to roll into the semifinals, but was forced to injury default his last three matches in finishing sixth.

UCO, ranked No. 3 in Division II after winning last year's national championship, is off next weekend before returning to action Dec. 2 at the Drury Open.
